Game Thread | 2021-22 Season | Game #6 | Cavs @ Lakers | Oct. 29, 2021

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We need to choke their offense and then let our guards slash them up. Run their tired old asses out of the gym.

The Lakers are 1-2 when he plays. He's shooting more 3's than ever. To be specific, in three games he's averaging 9.7 three-point attempts per game. His career average is 4.4 and his previous high was 6.3 (the last two years). So he's shooting 53% more 3's so far this year than he's ever shot before.

LeBron at nearly 37 years old is transitioning quickly to being more of a 3-point shooter than a slasher. And the Cavs are a great perimeter defending team - they rank 5th in opponents' 3-point percentage at 31%.

LeBron is averaging 20.0 shots per game and 9.7, or just under 50%, are 3's. He's conserving energy. They're playing him 38 minutes a game. He has to pace himself. If the Cavs press him on the perimeter and not let him get open looks they should be OK.

He's also averaging 5.3 assists per game, which is the lowest of his career despite playing more minutes per game than any season in 10 years. His game has had to change. Father Time is undefeated. He's transitioning to being a spot-up 3-point shooter instead of a slasher and distributor.

Maybe they can stick Lauri on him??

The assist numbers are also a function of the complete lack of shooting on their roster. He's pretty much their best shooter

Lebron can barely elevate off one leg nowadays compared to years past. I wouldn't be surprised if he settled for tons of shots from the outside or have to deal with being rejected by our plethora of bigs. He may try to force a switch against our little guards to perhaps attack from the post, so that should not be allowed. Although...they have no spacing so we could provide help in the post regardless.

It’s so strange seeing LBJ miss so many games now as he was basically IRON MAN for so many years. But like they said Father Time is UNDEFEATED

He is 36 years old. Like, they always say "father time is undefeated".

We are young, athletic, and big. The Lakers are old, savvy, and far past their athletic primes. It will be a good test for us to see whether are young energy can overcome their experience. It will also be a test for the Lakers to see whether their experience can overcome our energy and athleticism. That will be true for them all season, actually. I personally think their window has closed (or is at least sliding shut). They will have great games, of course, but I don't think they can sustain excellent play this season.

I can see the Cavs jumping on them early and coasting to a win. On the other hand, if it is close, then I give the Lakers the edge in a game decided in the last few minutes, where experience is key.

As irritating as Sexton can be to watch at times (though less so this year than in previous years), last game he showed us his value. There simply is no one else on the team who can do what he does -- break down a defense and create a scoring opportunity, on demand. Every team needs to have someone who can do that, and he's pretty much all we have right now. Garland can do it at times, but he doesn't finish well enough (or high enough) to do it on demand. Love used to have enough versatility to be a go-to guy, but those days are past (and it is harder for big guys anyways, because it takes more effort to get them the ball where they want it).

Time will tell whether Garland and Sexton can be a success starting backcourt duo, but with our current roster we need Sexton. I wish they could have locked him up for a second contract that was reasonable. I believe his asking price is going to go up this year (which I suppose would be a good thing with regard to how well he plays this season).

Cavs are first in the league in opponent free throw rate (0.149. For context, number two is 0.18 and last place is 0.276).

Cavs are third in the NBA in free throw rate (0.261).

They're getting to the line and not fouling. They're giving up the eighth or so most paint points a game, but you take that when you consider that rate for free throws.

Combine that with the opponent three point shooting the Cavs are putting up that @Wham with the Right Hand talked about, while also being top 15 (edit sorry, 21st and 18th) in steals and blocks and you have the recipe for something. Don't know how sustainable the opponent free throw rate is, but the anchor that is Mobley doesn't foul much himself so there seems to be correlation there.

Lakers are 14th in free throw rate (0.229).
Lakers are 27th (!) in opponent free throw rate (0.268). Their recourse is to foul.
They allow the most points in the paint in the NBA (55.6). Again, like @Wham with the Right Hand said, take it to the paint as much as possible.

Again. Thought LeBron was a GTD.

Did something come out already?
Dunno. I think this game is tough b/c LeBron is so cerebral and they are back at home. I can't see us destroying them by any means. We will force LBJ off of the 3 point line and he's a special player near the hoop, maybe not for huge elevation highlight jams, but for distributing or hockey assists. He's just a genius. We will have to play very well, especially on offense, since LeBron has a way of making things difficult, as does AD.

Does anyone have a link to watch the game? It's not on TV here in Chi-Town.

PS - Father Time is Undefeated.

I'm gonna have way too much fun watching Westbrook trying to drive into Mobley and Allen.

Good test, let's see how we handle AD and Bron.
