Game Thread | Game #32 | Jazz @ Cavs | Dec. 19, 2022

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I have a contact at Jared.

It’s cubic zirconia.

Edit: shit a guy actually had a link.

Scottie Barnes being the RoY makes me sick. He's been awful.
Though he and Mobley have similar conventional stats (Barnes: 15/7/5, Mobley: 15/9/3), Mobley is 76th in PER (17.93), whereas Barnes is 146th (15.17).

Barnes is a pretender.

Nice defense as they held the Jazz to 13 points under their road average. Of course not having Olynyk and Sexton helped. The Jazz shot just 39% from the field.

However, they did get 15 offensive rebounds as the Cavs had a lot of trouble on the defensive glass. I wasn't impressed with the 20 turnovers, either, but they shot so well it didn't matter. The percentages were amazing; 61.4% and 57.7%.

Stat of the year - the Jazz took 92 shots to only 70 for the Cavs, yet the Cavs won by 23 points. How often does a team take 22 fewer shots and win by 23? Or win at all?

Excellent balanced scoring by the Cavs with six players between 12-23 points.

Do we finally have a team that can fast break? It's starting to look like it.

Markkanen was impressive offensively with 24 points on just 12 shots. He drew a lot of fouls.

Good solid win against an undermanned team that doesn't play well on the road. They'll be a lot tougher at home, especially if they have Olynyk and Sexton.
Cavs had 8 more turnovers and 11 fewer offensive rebounds. But they had a 29-2 advantage in fast-break points.

Despite having 22 fewer shots, the Cavs MADE 7 more total shots, 5 more 3s, and 4 more FTs. That’s how you win by 23. If they took care of the ball and crashed the boards, they might have won by 50…

I had to suffer through the Utah Jazz broadcast of this game. I know our announcers are homers. But compared to the Jazz crew the Cavs announcers are as impartial as Bob Costas thinks he (himself) is.

And then there’s the fact that Mobley is having a DPOTY level season at 21 years old and Barnes might not even be making his team better when he steps on the floor.

What's insane is the Cavs are the slowest paced team in the NBA. Coming into last night they ranked 27th in fastbreak points per game at 11.3. They are not a team anyone would expect to get 29 fastbreak points.

It will be interesting to see if that was a fluke and they go back to averaging 11 or whether they will start to incorporate it more into their game.

Part of it was Okoro starting with Wade and Stevens out. Okoro attacks the rim on the break every chance he gets and he had a couple of nice dimes last night - one to Allen for a thunderous jam.

This is very interesting and… intriguing. During our 5 game losing streak, JB talked about how our fast break game was hurting us and our strength at that time was to slow the pace and run our sets.

This could be a sign of growth or just an anomaly. Either way, impressive.

That ROY award just feels like it’ll be in the category of a Malcolm Brogdon over Embiid or Ben Simmons over Donovan Mitchell.

Mobley will eventually be a routine all star and Barnes will carve out a decent career as a solid starter or rotational wing.

I also had the Jazz telecast because of regional blackout.

However, I have watched parts of several of their games this year, checking up on the ex-Cavs. The Utah
announcers are certainly homers, but I thought they gave the Cavs fair props where appropriate. It was
fun listening to them getting increasingly bummed out as the Cavs pulled away.
