Game Thread | Game #45 | Pelicans @ Cavs | Jan. 16, 2023

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Was at the game. My observations FWIW:
  • Rubio makes a difference, whether he's scoring or not.
  • Excellent games from Mobley and Allen.
  • 3 shooting was brutal.
  • Too many stupid turnovers.
  • If somebody wants Love in a trade - do it.
  • The Cavs have a strange ability to play like crap most of the game - then pull it together and win.
Your 6th bullet point will cause failure in the playoffs…..especially against teams like Boston, the Bucks and Philly

It’s Cleveland’s ninth win this season when trailing after three quarters -- the most in the NBA. It’s their league-leading 11th come-from-behind win when down by double digits at any point in the game. - Chris Fedor

If they didn't make it a habit of starting slow they wouldn't have to come from behind.

We played mediocre through 3 quarters, but good defense. In the 4th, we stepped it up and went on an 15-0 run to take the lead. Rubio, Allen, Mobley, and Garland were dominating them, with both Nance and Valanciunas in the game.

Allen scores 12, Garland 14 in the 4th quarter. We held them to 22 in the 4th. Mitchell out most of the game. I didn't hear why.

Both teams were sloppy with turnovers, but Cleveland only had 5 in the 2nd half.

Our 11th comeback after being down 10 or more, leading the NBA.

We had 13 offensive rebounds to their 3. That was a big difference.

Darius Garland highlights:

Love was awful, going 1-for-7 in 16 minutes and no defense as usual. He did have 8 rebounds and 3 assists, but he also committed two turnovers. I thought he might be coming out of his shooting slump after going 2-for-4 from deep against the Wolves, but today he was back to 0-for-4. I think that puts him at 3 for his last 27.
Love will eventually get out of his shooting funk. A very good 3-point shooter (and Love has been one his entire career) doesn't turn into a terrible shooter. On the other hand, his defense is only going to get worse, and it is already bad. We need the spacing that his shooting provides, especially with Wade out, and his experience and high basketball IQ will allow him to be effective in spots, depending on the matchups. However, the number of matchups for which he is effective seem to be dwindling, and as a result, his minutes should as well.

Good to see Garland not soil himself at the end of a game.

This looked like another epic choke job after Okoro missed an uncontested dunk followed by two turnovers on inbound passes after made baskets. But the Cavs kept their composure and Garland nailed a couple of huge 3's (as did Okoro) to fend off the Pelicans.

The Cavs won the 4th quarter 35-22 with no Donovan Mitchell. Allen and Mobley were outstanding as was Garland. Rubio was a +13 in his 17 minutes and Stevens was a +16 in 20.

I thought Mobley in particular played very well with 19 points on just 10 shots, 8 rebounds, and numerous shots altered. He also forces a lot of potential shooters to give up and pass the ball out after getting into the paint.

Allen had one of his best, if not THE best game of the year with 24 points on only 12 shots, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and a block while working against Valanciunas. But Garland stole the show with 30 points and 11 assists while playing the entire second half, if I'm not mistaken.

Very nice win against a quality team, but if they had Ingram and Zion they kick our butt.

Cedi got five minutes in the first half and never saw the court again. I think JBB is losing confidence in him. Cedi has 12 points in his last five games, averaging just 11 minutes per game.
How does one miss an uncontested dunk?

Rubio and Garland = good things happen
I once declared that Rubio and Garland would be unplayable together. I still don't understand why that combination works but it always seems to (nba.com says they were +16.1 in 512 min last year)
