Game Thread | Game #49 | Cavs @ Knicks | Jan. 24, 2023

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Every game I write up a preview, but apparently I am missing some key facts.

Yes, the Knicks had lost four in a row, they were missing their best defensive player by far, they were 0-3 since his injury while allowing 123, 125, and 139 points, and they have a losing record at home. On top of that, the Cavs were getting Mitchell back. All the arrows were pointing up.

What I forget to mention was the two most important considerations. One, the Cavs suck on the road. Two, the Cavs tend to choke in the final two minutes if the game is close, usually because either Garland or Mitchell abandons the game plan and tries to win the game by himself.

The good thing is these guys are accountable. They take responsibility.

Poor execution on my part down the stretch. They drew up perfect plays and I just didn’t execute them. - Donovan Mitchell

Instead, he drove into a Knick team meeting in the paint, forced up a missed shot over a 7-footer, and re-injured himself in the process. This was after the Cavs had about ten minutes to draw up a "perfect play" while the refs were trying to figure out whether the last Knicks' shot grazed the rim.

If you have a perfect play, then run the perfect play. SMH.

On the two previous possessions Mitchell drove into a crowd of Knicks in the paint and coughed up the ball each time, not even getting a shot up on critical possessions. I'm sick of the hero ball. I get that he was counting on getting a foul call as the worst case scenario, but that's not how it worked out. You can't just drive into a crowd of defenders and depend on the refs to call, especially on the road in a game that's close and late. They will figure it's best to let the players decide the game, not a referee's judgement.

OK, apparently Mitchell did run the play they planned on the final possession.

The Cavs wanted Knicks power forward Julius Randle as the primary defender, believing Mitchell had a clear advantage with that matchup.

Unfortunately, his legs cramped as he got into his shot, otherwise he probably scores and we go into overtime.

But right behind Mitchell’s achy groin was a recurring topic: The young Cavaliers’ troubling lack of fourth-quarter execution.

Over the final four minutes, the Cavs tallied just seven points and went 3 of 11 from the field. Surprisingly, Mitchell was the main culprit. After opening the fourth with three made triples, Mitchell misfired on his last six attempts, including three shots around the rim in the final 1:18. - Fedor

I'm getting tired of the coach and reporters trying to use youth as an excuse. Mitchell, Garland, Allen, Rubio, Okoro, Love, LeVert - all those guys are veterans. The only guy who could be considered young is Mobley. Even Okoro has started 147 NBA games.

Until the Cavs figure out how to play better on the road and how to execute better in the final two minutes they are not going to be one of the elite teams in the Eastern Conference.

Absolutely. I'm sick of it as well. Anytime it comes down to one shot it's Donovan or Darius going 1-on-5 after dribbling the clock down to 5 seconds. In a case like that if what you try doesn't result in a good shot there's no time to try again.

It's like Garland getting a desparation 3-pointer blocked by a 6'7" guy at the final buzzer when we only needed two points to win last week.

What they should do is run their normal offense, break down the defense, and try to get the ball to a big man for a dunk or kick it out for an uncontested 3.
Somebody help me! Try as I may I watch the Cavalier offense I don’t really see any “sets” being run. The ball stays on the perimeter 18 of 24 second clock with our guards playing “hand off and peekaboo” behind JA and Mobley. Our only real offense is the slip pick and lobs to JA and Mobley…..otherwise its DG and DM going one on one and throwing it to the corners for bailout shots by Okoro or Stevens! This offense is so disjointed and stagnant with no one to space the floor. And until we get a real wing player that stroke the three with consistency and being to put pressure on the defense off the dribble we are looking at a first round exit or worst the play in! If this team ends up in the play in again JBB should be fired immediately!

From Fedor:

Tuesday was the 13th time this season an opponent made 15 or more 3s. The Cavs are now just 1-12 in those games.
It's a lot easier to get away with allowing that kind of volume when you at least have the shooting ability to keep up.

The lack of consistent perimeter scoring from this team only magnifies their awful perimeter defense.

I don't usually post after a loss because I'm too depressed. But I watched the NBA top 10 and a Cav got into it. One bright point for you.

LeVert is the only guy on our bench who is playable and he's the one you want to dump?? He's also been fantastic defensively this year and allows the team to compete when either Garland or Mitchell is out. The bench on this team is awful and we desperately need shooting for spacing, but ridding us of Levert is like cutting off your nose to spite your face.
yes. Lavert is on a contract year playing over his career averages (sounds familiar?), and its just a matter of time before he gets injured (Which he always does literally every season of his career) and plummets back down to his career averages. If there is a single other team in the NBA that thinks he has value the Cavs need to jump on that right now. Just because RCF was down doesnt meant he didnt single handily cost this team a win by himself. His boneheaded defensive and offensive plays at this point are infuriating.

In comparison Kevin Love who literally hasnt been able to hit a shot in the last 3 weeks, is shooting all of 2% less on 3 point shots than Lavert this season. Before this season Laverts career average of 3s is 34%, this year its at 38%. In his 9 years in the NBA he has shot over 35% from 3s twice (this year and 5 years ago).

All of this once again on a contract year. The cavs arent winning a championship this year, they shouldnt re-sign him. So if the cavs have a chance to trade him for value they need to

I'm not a huge fan of LeVert's, but you are being unfair to him. He's not "playing over his averages". Yes, his 3 point percentage is a 4% over his career average, but his 2 point percentage is 4% under his average. His points are near a career low.
If they trade him now they had better get a starter or close to starter in return as Levert is basically getting starting minutes and is the only dependable scoring we have on the bench. Take LeVert away right now and add nothing useful this year and we are back in the play in. The bench scored all of 12 points last night and LeVert had 9 of them in 20 minutes and went 2-4 on threes. For the month he's hitting 45% from three. I get it he's a popular whipping boy here, but besides him our bench is like deck chairs on the Titanic.

The more physical team is going to get the benefit of the doubt. If the team hasn't learned this halfway through the season, then they aren't going to.

The home team gets the benefit of the doubt. However, you'd think Mitchell being an All-Star would get him some love from the refs. This isn't the first time the refs have swallowed their whistles late in a close game with the Cavs on the road.
