Game Thread | Game #74 | Cavs @ Nets | March 21, 2023 | NBA-TV

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Mitchell helping us get past the rudderless Nets in a regular season game is not going to make me change my stance on the trade.

It was an impulsive, shortsighted move from an ownership and front office tandem foaming at the mouth for us to be Portland East, a perennial playoff contestant powered by undersized guards with no hopes of ever actually contending for a championship.

Congrats to the Cavs on their win! I listened to parts of the 4th quarter on the radio and we had the game well in hand, from 14-22 points up.

We won the 2nd and 3rd quarters more than we lost the 1st and 4th.

Nice to see we were hitting the 3 ball tonight, as well as our usual efficiency from 2.

I see JBB went with a 9 man rotation. Whatever works.

Yeah he was a big “help” tonight.

By all means die on that hill. We’ll erect a suitable monument.

Individual stats:

Starters:
Allen 12-14-1 with 2 blocks in 35 minutes. Welcome back, Jarrett!
Garland 17-1-6 with a steal in 32 minutes. Good minutes.
Mitchell 31-5-3 in 37 minutes, 5-9 from 3, 10-22 fg. Glad to see the 3s dropping!
Mobley 17-4-3 with a steal in 36 minutes
Okoro 0-3-2 with a steal in 20 minutes. Off night shooting, 0-4

Bench: 38-6-8 in 31 minutes. Not bad for a short bench.
Osman 12-4-3 with a block in 23 minutes. 4-4 from 3!
LeVert 18-2-4 with 2 steals in 31 minutes Fills up the stat sheet!
Rubio 8-0-1 with a steal in 19 minutes. Solid
Stevens 0-1-0 in 6 minutes

Oh please dude.

Get real on that one. Portland never, and I mean never had an Evan Mobley talent. Not Greg Oden. Not Arvydas Sabonis. Nobody.

This team isn't how far Donovan Mitchell takes them. It's can Mobley developed into a Tim Duncan and learn to be elite on both ends.

Portland NEVER had a player with the upside and two way potential of Mobley in their front court during that Lillard/McCollum era

Koby or whoever is in charge of the Cavs trades these next two offseasons will have the opportunity to fill in the additional wings that we need.

And IF we need to pivot to a more traditional modern nba roster structure, we’ll have the option to.

But your opinion and Portland comparison, while it could be in the realm of all possible outcomes, is way way premature and way overly simplistic

If that Portland team had Lillard, McCollum, and Aldridge all clicking at the same time and averaging 20 ppg, they probably would've been in the finals at least once.

Very unimpressive win as the Cavs were up by 22 with 6:44 to go and just stopped playing as the Nets went on a 20-4 run. The Nets had 19 offensive rebounds and this is a team that ranks 29th of 30 in offensive rebounding over the last 15 games. No blocking out by the Cavs at all.

Not one damn field goal in the last seven minutes of this game. They eked out seven points on free throws. Pathetic.

The Nets were able to draw a lot of fouls late in the 4th to score points with the clock stopped. I never thought the game would end. The Cavs kept turning it over and missing easy shots.

But on the bright side, it was great to get Allen back and he had 8 offensive rebounds. The Cavs won on 3-point shooting, especially Cedi (4-for-4) and Mitchell (5-for-9). LeVert was 3-for-6 from deep and hit two big ones in the 3rd when the Nets were rolling.

I still think Isaac Okoro is really bad at defense. I can't figure out why JBB says he is an "elite" defender. He's awful. Never gets a steal or a block, fouls a lot, and is too small to defend the rim. Doesn't get defensive boards, either.

The Cavs gave up 54 points in the paint. They did not play great defense, but held the Nets to 109 points because of bad 3-point shooting (9-for-33). All the Nets needed was to shoot 33% from deep and it's a tie game.

The NBA TV announcer said the Cavs were giving a "textbook example of how not to close out a game". I agree. The Cavs started the 4th with a 16-point lead, pushed it out to 22, and then imploded.

But a win is a win, especially on the road. Nice to see Mitchell get his 3-point stroke back. Not thrilled with Garland's five turnovers, but the Nets were doubling him on pick-and-rolls and deflecting his passes.

Day'Ron Sharpe, a 21-year-old second year power forward, came off the bench to score 20 points with 11 rebounds in 20 minutes. He was a +27 and kicked the Cavs' butt. His career average is 5.1 points.

Hopefully on Thursday the Cavs do a better job on the defensive glass and the Nets stay cold on 3's.

The ending is frustrating but it very common for all teams. How many times have the Cavs been down big and then start hitting 3s in the latter stages of the 4th qtr to make the game closer than it really was.

I am worried about the late game offense though. This has become way too common.
Without LeVert’s last second 3 to end the 3rd and the steal when Brooklyn cut it to 11 who knows how this game ends.
Your second paragraph is the key. It wouldn’t matter if teams hit a bunch of 3’s late in games if we didn’t have those 5-8 minute 4th quarter stretches where we only score 6

I'll watch the game now. I missed it real-time, but I don't mind if we win.

1Q
It's good to see JA again. Got our first basket.
We're trading baskets. 17-16 Nets. We both look a little ragged. AC said each team was feeling the other out.
Bench is in. We've given up a couple of steals due to bad passing.
Our small guards look great on the perimeter. They're not getting any 3s.
Allen keeps hustling on rebounds. We're pretty sloppy handling the ball. Down 4. 27-23. 5 turnovers for us.
Harris looks so much more confident than he did with us, hits a 3
Down 7, 30-23
2Q
Mitchell, Rubio, Osman, Mobley, LeVert to open the 2nd.
Mitchell hits a pure 3 and follows it up with another. 6 points in about 20 seconds give us the lead.
Bridges has hit a variety of mid-range shots. Looks a little like DeRozan. Then LeVert stopped him.
Rubio always gets open 15 footers. It's like they forget about him.
Osman hits a quick 3. He looked really good.
LeVert can always draw fouls. He hangs and double-pumps. Watanabe with 3 fouls in 4 minutes.
AC says the Cavs are grinding it out in this quarter. We're certainly patient and playing good defense.
Cedi gets his second 3. LeVert goes out and Mitchell comes in, leading with 13 points.
Osman hits his 3rd 3. When we hit 3s, you can't cut into our lead and if you don't score, you fall further behind. Mobley hits a 3. He's 1-2 from 3.
Allen to Mobley for a dunk over Claxton! There's only one of him.
Cavs up 6 at the half, 61-55. Good offense, good defense in the 2nd quarter.
