Hafner will sign four-year, $57 million extension with Indians on Thursday
Posted by Paul Hoynes July 11, 2007 19:10PM

Travis Hafner is staying in Cleveland for a while. The Indians' designated hitter has come to terms on a four-year, $57 million contract extension that will keep him in Cleveland through 2012.

The deal will be announced Thursday afternoon.

Progress reportedly was made over the All-Star break on a multi-year deal. Negotiations had been tabled in April, but were reopened over the break with the approval of Shapiro and Scott Parker, Hafner's agent with Legacy Sports Group in San Francisco. The two sides negotiated by phone over the break.

Hafner's contract for this year was increased, and his club option for 2008 was picked up and also increased. The last four years of the contract will be for an estimated $48 million, with the breakdown $11 million per season in 2009 and 2010; and $13 million per season in 2011 and 2012.

The Indians have reached agreement with two of their three primary free-agent-to-be targets. Earlier in the year they reached a three-year $33 million extension with right-hander Jake Westbrook. C.C. Sabathia, also represented by Legacy Sports Group, can be a free agent after the 2008 season.

What was the years and money that Hafner rejected? Was it 4 years for 45 mil? Or something like that?

Good news for the Tribe... I think, like people have mentioned, we got it done now, instead of when maybe his market value would of been sky high... Right now we actually got him at the right price...

As far as CC, I expect him gone but maybe this is a new side of Indians management that will spend to win, who knows... If he does command a ridiculous amount above 20 mil, then I'd say bye-bye, I don't think there are a lot of pitchers that are worth that and he's not one of them...

We have enough pitching in our system to bring up and still be successful... We didn't have the hitting to replace Hafner...

We have guys like Sowers, Miller, Huff, Lofgren etc., who can all give us some solid pitching and with the way Fausto is pitching, he likes a #1... And if Lee can get back on track, we'll be fine...

Pitching wins championships, but it doesn't mean splurging on a pitcher like CC...

20+ wins for $20 mill...Im all for it.

Get him signed.

CC said this goes a long way in showing him this organization is commited to winning

"It would be huge [if a deal is reached]," Tribe ace C.C. Sabathia said. "I would be happy. I would definitely take that as a good sign about getting something done with me. Everybody wants to stay. The core of this team has been together for a long time. We've been through a lot together, and we want to bring a championship to Cleveland together."

Encouraging.

Except for every player on every team has said that.

I was listening to Pluto and he said the Tribe will have no problem giving him between 18-20 million a year.. Just so long it's a 4 year deal with a team option for a 5th... He said no team in their right mind should offer him that type of cash over a 6/7 year period.... If a team does ? He'll go there, but if those offers don't come along, the tribe will pay him just as much as any other team over a 4/5 year period..

What's the wait for then? If they have no problem doing it, I dont see why CC wouldnt take that deal.

There is no cap in baseball. If he wants 20 millions then if we want to win you have to pay it. Money wins. Look at the Sox, Yanks.

CC will be in Anaheim/Oakland next year. Book it.

Are you serious. Oakland, bro get real, get a grip how would Oakland pay CC if the Indians didn't. :weirdo:

CC is a must. I remember somebody by the name a mac aka the truth saying that CC wasnt a #1. :thumbdown

YESSSS...4 years 57 million...3 mill less than we all anticipated.

Stuff that into the CC for the future fund...

I just hope the fans don't try to raise money to keep him in town like they did with Manny..that made our owner look...cheap. And it was pretty damn pathetic that the fans that make minimum wage and grind out every week giving their hard earned dollars up when a multi millionaire sat in his sweet and let the team go to pot.

I did say that...but I never said he wasnt a good pitcher. I was always frustrated by the injuries due to him being over weight. I still wished he lose some more weight, I think it would help him, but he is putting it together this year.

You have to admit that Dolan deserves some credit... he has handed out some nice paydays now to Peralta, Sizemore, Lee, Westbrook, and now Hafner. For as much flack as this guy has taken he is showing that he is serious about keeping these guys in town. I still think CC is an entirely different proposition though. I hope Pluto is right about us going 4 years for that much... but you still have to think someone out there will pull a Zito and offer him that much over 6 or 7 years. Then basically our hands are tied and we'd have to let him walk. That's why I say you start to gauge where he and his agent are at now... and if it seems like next year they are still looking for that huge long-term deal we may want to start exploring trade options. I just don't want to see him walk after next year and us get nothing in return.

Awsome signing, the heart of our lineup is pretty well set. Now this just leaves CC.

Honestly, if Dolan gave it up and signed CC to an extension I'd forever drop the cheap label from him. CC can really demand whatever he wants being a possible 20 game southpaw who can anchor a staff.

Hopefully people start going to the games now....

Oakland won't sign CC, they didn't even try with Zito. It is not how they operate.
