Yeah, that would have been the smart move. He could say that all of his issues were the stress of the pandemic (when he randomly missed games), and that the vaccine was a once in a lifetime type of dispute. That the retweet was really unfortunate but he made it right. He could say that with all that behind him, he’s ready to just play. He was named an All Star starter. And if he lasted until May, or whenever they got knocked out the playoffs, he could really make a decent case for at least close to max money. Teams are desperate.

Nobody can see a decade out, much less two decades. Nor is there anything close to a guarantee that the Lakers win a championship this year even with that trade. Kyrie easily could walk at the end of the season and leave them with nothing except an aging team and no assets. Or maybe he stays and goes off the deep end again, leaving them with a huge salary and no player.

As an owner, she's making the right decision. Unlike a lot of other owners, Buss is not independently wealthy, and cannot burn a lot of her own money like Dan does. She has to think about the long term because nobody else will.
