First game without Bickerstaff a 20 point blowout . Yes I am a hater

Maybe, they played harder last night because Buckner even said he runs the same exact system as Bickerstaff.

That's been one of our issues is that we slack off in the first and third quarters...That's not a coaching issue it's a player's issue.

Obviously, they are running the same system. It's not like Buck installed a whole new system at shootaround.

However, I don't agree that first and third-quarter performances are totally player issues. There's blame to be shared, sure, but those are the quarters where a coach has the most control. They're fresh out of the locker room with the game plan fresh in their minds. I would lean toward first and third-quarter performances being more closely linked to coaching than anything else.

maybe they played harder because they saw a gettable W v the Bulls w/o Zach LaVine after a few missed chances v other bottom feeding NBA teams.

I'll say this about JB: this team seems to like each other a good deal, and that isn't always easy in the NBA, and it gets harder w/L's weighing down the wrong side of the W/L ledger. People should not discount that totally.

Prince said he is he best coach he ever had and that includes Bud and Atkinson.

I know the offense isn't pretty, but maybe having one other offensively gifted player in Love makes the difference? They are at 111 offrating since Love has been back. That isn't mindblowing, but it is 6 pts better than the last time I checked.

I think JB deserves a year to install an offense. He did a good job installing a defense, which I think will also be better next year when guys get more breathing room between games.

I have heard teams have had as few as 8 practices all year long. Most away shootarounds have been non-existent. Just not good for a young team.

I don't think it is time to call it quits. If they still look this bad offensively next year, then we do have a problem.

I do think the team tends to think they have arrived after winning a couple of games. That last bulls loss was inexcusable as the same team a few days later they just blew them out. Vuc and those other scrubs is not as good as our team. Put Lavine on there and then they are a little more equal.

I agree that JB should get at least another year. With the Covid, very young roster, more than usual injuries, etc., it's hard to know if he's personally doing well or not... and being a coach the players seem to like is a plus in the current NBA where the inmates are running the asylum. Still, the endorsement from Prince means nothing. All middle-of-the-road or lower players are going to praise their current coach as a way to stay employed.

I had to go back through 4 pages of discussions to blow the dust off of this one.

We all love to hate our head coaches, it's been a Cavs tradition going back as long as I can remember.

Somehow this group of players is giving max effort, defending at a high level, sometimes even moving the ball and moving without the ball. The bottom line is they're playing like they're bought in. There seems to be a positive culture being developed on this squad.

At any point does JBB get any credit from this group of Cavs fans? Nothing posted here since last April.

Hes 6-4. If this continues and the Cavaliers win 60% of their games (48 games) then he'd be a CoY candidate. Not saying he's that but he's not a candidate to get fired either.

If the team wasn't playing together or with effort he'd be trashed for that.

Criticism has IMHO been one sided and unfair.

As I said Cavs fans love to hate on their coaches. Lots of the time it's with good reason. Can this fan base ever accept a head basketball coach? People here still hated Lue even after we won a title with him, LOL.

I still do today, and I will again tomorrow.

Ah yes - I know this forest you speak of. Many are too focused on the trees.

Ricky Rubio should be the COTY candidate

No, and neither will Koby.

Remember, this is the decision tree for Club Pessimist (which, unfortunately, includes a lot of fans):
  • If things are going well: the coach and GM deserve absolutely no credit. They're simply not screwing things up enough to keep the players from winning. Or their moves were obvious ones that "anybody could have made". e.g., "anybody could have picked Evan Mobley" (even though two teams didn't, so maybe it wasn't as obvious a decision as thought)
  • If things aren't going well: the coach and GM are completely at fault. The players may suck, but only because the coaching is so inept. And any moves by the GM were wrong, no matter what. (To pick one obvious example, Kevin Porter Jr. has been lighting it up while leading Houston to a fast start; clearly a terrible move to let him go.)
But since you revived this thread, let me say that JBB deserves a hell of a lot of credit for getting this group to buy in and to play unselfish, team-focused ball. Absolutely nobody on this planet would have picked the Cavs to be 7-4 after 11 games, especially with most of those games being against quality opponents on the road.

Giving him the right roster was imperative…but also Sometimes it’s important to let a coach have time, more than just one season, to install his systems and build the culture he wants. The Cavs have had so much turnover…I’m glad there is some stability now with Mobley coming in and Garland starting to show out.
He may not be our Steve Kerr but there’s nothing wrong with him being our Mark Jackson. Jackson was imperative to the early years of those GS teams and was a big part of the identity they built before Kerr came in and opened up the offense and helped bridge Steph into the star he is.

I like to check other teams message boards after we play them. EVERY fanbase has their loud, vocal coach haters. Doesnt matter which team or which coach. Not sure why, but Its a big part of being a fan for some. A lot of couch coaches out there in the world. I get criticizing coaches decisions, but blaming everything on a coach is a little too simplistic.

I have been trying to defend JBB. People are still shitting on him. He has a long ways to go to be a HOF coach, but this young team is playing incredible defense and passing the ball. Not sure if he brought in a new assistant, tried a new approach, or Rubio is helping his voice, but JBB has to be responsible for some of what we see from this team.
