Browns | Edwards visits; team working to sign him
Sun, 12 Mar 2006 18:53:30 -0800

Mary Kay Cabot, of the Plain Dealer, reports the Cleveland Browns are working to sign free agent DE Kalimba Edwards (Lions), Browns general manager Phil Savage confirmed. "Obviously we're in it," Savage said of the Edwards negotiations. "I can't say for sure if he's coming or not, but we're hopeful." Edwards was in Cleveland Saturday, March 11, and Sunday, March 12.

Scouting Report from a guy at a Browns message Board take it for what it's worth...

Coming out of SC this kid was put into the WRONG system...He is way 2 small for a DE in a 4-3 D yet has explosion off the edge...That will and did classify him as that all glorified TWEENER...

Perfect for a 3-4 as an OLB...Which is where he shoulda went in the first place...Yet Millen was DUMB enuff to take him in 2...Imagine that...The same moron that gave Az-Ahkim the big bucks coming from the Rams because???...lmao...Because he produced in a high flyin' pass happy O...OK MATTY...2 great moves...

He's plenty fast enuff...Even more QUICK...We sign this dude and slip em' into that OLB role and let em' loose...You're looking at the next McGinest...6' 6" and 265 with his quicks...

PERFECT and nowhere near a cap buster like Arrington and Peterson...

As long as he is very cheap..

No DEs and no LBs worth noting to make our biggest need better.

Dissapointed so far with that aspect. But the draft is still to come and Peterson is still on the market.

Be happy Mac, we are the winners of Free Agency thus far, the rest of the division is staring with their mouths open watching us.

The WHOLE draft will be defense you better beleive it.

We have gone offense like the last 3 years, it's time we use some 1sts and 2nds on defense and we will. Kalimba is solid, if Peterson is around by Wednesday I'm calling it that he will be a Brown :)

I think Peterson and Arrington are both going to be cap killers. Arrington has basically only had 2 stellar seasons in his career, and his cap number is gonna be unrealistic. Peterson, maybe, but he still has struggled with injuries. If you can take a guy like Edwards and sign him for 3 million per, or thereabouts, you might be pleasantly suprised. If he doesnt workout, you can cut him in a year or so. Another guy to maybe look at would be Andre Carter, but he probably will have unrealistic demands as well.

What about the guy from the Colts, I remember reading an article about him before but nothing has come about. He is an outside linbacker in teh 3-4 system.

June?

Defense wins in the North...that and ball control obviously. But I would really like us to develope a dominate defense and just seeing McKinley and Ben Taylor still in our lineup irks me the wrong way..

Dont get me wrong, Im exstatic...sp?...about our OL signings, I definently wanted to shore that up but this guy and JJ do not excite me as difference makers.

I was really hoping for that Trevor Pryce, Peterson mold of a difference maker on defense. Arrington seems to be set on the Giants according to NFL Network, so Pete is still out there so maybe we still have a chance.

And at the #12 spot in the draft I just dont see us taking somebody that is going to be like, damn...that was a great pick.

Well McKinley is still going to be around but beleive me all the focus in the world will be on our defense from here on out. Don't worry about McKinley, with Roye and Washington and hopefully another Fa or draft selection McKinley will be riding pine.

As for Ben Taylor kffl.com is reporting he is meeting with the Pacers, he is an UFA and will never be a Cleveland Brown again :)

With that line we have and with Rueben running hard as hell we will own time of posession in a LOT of games. JJ was a good signing, he isn't going to go get you 100 catches and 1,000 yards Bryant if you ONLY throw to him which was the case all year. Bryants stats were inflated due to the fact of K2 and Braylon not being in the games and having an awful distributor in Dilfer.

The Seahawks were heartbroken to see JJ go, I read an insider at Scout calling JJ their 1 year savior. He won't drop many which is important to a young QB's confidence, and with Braylon and K2 in the fold we didn't need a number one, he also came at a hometown discount as we offered less then Seattle. They offered 3.5 we got em for 2.5 :)

CDT, great post... I agree with a lot of it.

I think Kalimba Edwards can be a huge upgrade for us. If he can quickly make the transition for the OLB in the 3-4 than we pulled off a great move.

Also the draft will definately be used to improve our defense.

I just had a feeling football was not his sport.

You and me both LePip.

I dont doubt JJ is going to be a solid player for us. Im anxious to get the season here already, trust me.

I just want to see some success. We have been waiting a long time you know?

Clevelanders are broken hearted here.

ur damn right thats why i just want the cavs to make it and work from there.when the seedings for the playoffs are out and i see our name that will be getting over a nice hump for me.i hope we go after david givens also.

Yeah I'm trying to keep you happy Mac, I had a gif of JJ catching one over a diving Polamalu and smashing into Hope it was a circus catch :)

Did anybody know who Tom Brady was before that Monday Night football game when Beldsoe got hurt. Not many, and Tom Brady is pretty damn good. I think a lot of people get tied up with the big name palyers, espically when it comes to baseball, the trades by Shapiro. David Givens was a no name until the Pats starting winning, David Patton was let go by the Browns and he seemed to play pretty well with the Pats.

What Im trying to get at is football is a team game, and you arent going to have these "big names" all over the field.

Phil is bringing in players who will prove themselves, players who fit in the system that RAC is implementing. The "big name" players dont work all the time. The front office has put in hundreds of hours preparing for the FA and draft.

Robert Mathis was the player I was thinking about earlier.

The Pats drafted those guys...but the Pats always brought in good players to fill holes they needed. Which is what I am saying at DE and LB.

You need people that can play in this system...LBs can become stars in this system, but you need a great DL for that to happen. So I am cool with developing our LBs, but we have to input a great DL.
