It's only odd if you are under the mistaken belief that the Cavs management team is obsessed with the short term in the same way many misguided fans are.
A trade for Simmons has always been about the long term -- all the injuries did is add an additional short term need on top of that. They may even have strengthened the long-term need argument to the extent we considered Rubio potentially a long-term answer as the b/u PG. But instead of making a move for Simmons then, when both our long-term and short-term needs were at their highest, we signed someone else.
If Simmons really was a smart long-term acquisition, why didn't we acquire him already instead of making other moves for a PG?
