Did Koby Altman nail the rebuild?

This year will tell a lot. If they start showing signs of progress, yes. Another 25-57 season, no. 2 weeks countdown.

Teams are perfectly free to cancel a trade if a dude is injured. The Cavs would have cancelled the trade with the Celtics for a better offer from someone else except...there wasn't one. And the Cavs' medical people apparently told the Cavs that he'd be okay in time for the playoffs, so they got a but of extra compensation and went ahead with the deal.

No reason a team couldn't cancel a trade for Kemba of it turned out he was hurt worse than expected.

I think the Boston medical staff caught something with IT's injury that wasn't disclosed. If I remember correct his injury needed surgery because something in his hip bone needed to be shaved down so it wouldn't keep cutting the muscle. Stuff like that probably takes multiple doctors and appointments to finally figure out.

A one day work up can only find so much. People go for second and third opinions all the time and might get different answers to what the doctor thinks their problem is.

wait, I read that the CC docs found red flags with IT3 that Boston never disclosed, which is why there was a 2nd rounder added a week later .Was that not what happened? I remember thinking a second rounder was a joke, and not enough.
Either way Boston looking pretty stupid, with Sexton about to get paid, and Boston with no Kyrie. So who cares

I went back and read some articles. ESPN says that Boston didn't disclosure how long they thought it would take him to rehab. The quotes by IT are interesting too, either they didn't tell him how bad it was or he was trying to project confidence that he would be back in that contract year for him.

Either way I definitely understand if most teams won't trust Ainge at all after it. They wanted to pond off IT on to another team and I wouldn't be surprise if he was trying to do it with Kemba too.

right and he did end up getting surgery long time later, after all. I think smh

I think this thread is absurd and the title is absolutely worthy of the meme it has become. That being said, I realized since last night that even with some rumors about flipping the pick etc etc, I’m not really worried because I actually do trust Koby with regard to trade/talent evaluation. It’s a nice feeling!

Was just thinking.... it's *possible* not probable that Koby rugged all of us so hard and did a genius thing.
1. Acquire talent without fit. Done.
2. Keep it misfit so that the record is bad to get a better pick. Done.
3. Trade out of the bad fit somehow (looks like Sexton but who knows).
4. All of a sudden be young and good, then Love will expire.
5. Profit.

There could be a path here. I am totally thinking he fails at this and Sexton goes to the Spurs and balls out... BUT - maybe this is his version of The Process. Maybe Koby Altman, of all people, will truly nail the rebuild.

Interesting alt take on Drafting BPA no matter what. You have to figure if you take BPA they will usually not be good because of lack of fit.

Never really understood why probably 90% of people are on board with a BPA strategy, yet some end up criticizing Altman for lack of fit. :dunno:

Haha, good point. I think it's different when you have a bare cupboard and no talent like we had when we drafted Colin, versus this year's draft, in which we only got the great pick due to sucking, injuries, and luck. Perhaps at this point, now with KPJ gone and the Drummond failure, it's time to go into fit mode.

I mean, Koby had a decent plan I think, but Like Richfield says - he just needs someone who gets the players. Like if KPJ had worked out, imagine Garland (who had a nice year of improvement), a non-crazy KPJ, with Sexton off the bench.

That's his issue though - he's just out of touch or something is off... like I wouldn't imagine Drummond would come off of the bench... but then again, he was kind of vindicated with Drummond because the dude was such a headache that after he went to the Lakers, he didn't get any burn in their game 6 loss after being a net negative in games 4 & 5.

I don't know about Koby.... I swear he shows some flashes of being really really good, but he's rough around the edges... I can see reasons to be really high on him, and obviously some big blunders.... he's got a big year here... let's see what he can do to adapt.

We all said we would trade our soul for a title. We did that. Traded everything not nailed down for a title. The fish in Gilbert's office stopped swimming in fear of getting traded.

Kyrie fucked up running it back, but we tried and failed.

We have no been in a full rebuild for 3 years. People hate rebuilds but people looove to complain. So what are they doing? Naturally complaining.

But I am with you, he has drafted well. And made a couple of nice trades and gave very little up.

Extending his own players has been a bit rough. Love whoever its on, was a massive over pay, and Cedi was an over pay. But if we are not a free agent destination, especially while we suck, anyone we would have gotten in free agency instead would have ben an over pay.

Big offseason for Koby. #3 pick, decision on Hartenstein and Allen. To trade or not to trade Sexton. His extension if we dont trade.

I think Koby has done ok so far, but still an incomplete

Altman reminds me a bit of John Dorsey. He has a good eye for players and acquires them successfully, but isn't very good at putting together a successful *team*.

I thought he did a great job pivoting from the miss-matched shit-show Dan Gilbert forced on his first year to a group with pieces that fit around LeBron very well. That mid-season overhaul was really well done and gives me some hope here.
We are at over-haul time though.
You can't wait another year compiling mismatched parts. Asset parlays need to be played this offseason.
I will give you that Dan Gilbert is effectively the NBA's (super lucky that LeBron was born in Akron) version of Jimmy Haslem
