Did Koby Altman nail the rebuild?

The draft is really a crapshoot, so I am somewhat impressed with Koby. He seems to have found guys with a solid foundation who are willing to work. They may not look like a HR on day 1, but they gradually improve.

If you draft for fit, you wind up taking guys like Anthony Bennett. If you draft "what you assume to be BPA" you wind up like Minnesota & their ridiculous run on PG. Alot of it is luck, you just hope to have the staff to help make an educated pick as well as develop the talent.

His black marks on his record are the Love deal, lack of winning, the KPJ situation & lack of asset accumulation. Three of those black marks go away if you win & the 4th falls off the books in 2 more years.

...
I will give you that Dan Gilbert is effectively the NBA's (super lucky that LeBron was born in Akron) version of Jimmy Haslem
Interesting analogy that would have been viewed completely differently prior to about 2017 or 18.

Substantial difference in the cards dealt with team building (elite QBs and for that matter key non-QB positions very rarely change teams in prime, and free agency is drastically affected by how NFL players can spend Feb and usually a lot of Jan in CA/FL.)

Are we sure the love deal was not Gilbert insisting on it ?

We have obviously heard that rumor. I could see it either way. The one thing I do know is that this franchise needed to have 1 of its key pieces around for a rebuild.

it should be noted that I too fall into the trap of assuming all crappy Cavs-related decisions start with Gilbert.
And, despite any and all facts to the contrary, will remain true to that faith.

With Garland getting the call up, that’s two Olympians (Love and Garland) that Koby is responsible for. Add in what he did the other times we slid in the lottery (Collin and Issac, a 24 ppg scorer and an All Rookie second team) and now adding a franchise guy, and this thread is looking more and more accurate. It’s hard to imagine another GM doing much better with the hands dealt. We’ve got a good one here.

But he lost Olympian Delly to an NBL team

Sure, Garland got called up to the Olympic team. So did career schlubs John Jenkins, Josh Magette, Dakota Mathias and Cam Reynolds, so I'm not sure how strong of an inference we can draw from that..

This is a phenomenal troll.

I think Koby has made some solid moves and done about as well as can be expected. His draft picks have been solid. The trade for Jarrett Allen was a steal. Trading for Drummond was a gamble worth taking.

The three red marks I’d give him are:

1) the Love extension. I’d put that one more on Gilbert than I would Koby, however.
2) taking Windler over Keldon Johnson. That was a mistake, in hindsight, and we’d be better off with Johnson.
3) the KPJ meltdown & trade. There’s a lot of inconsistency in how the KPJ & Kevin Love situations were handled. Love is still here only because of his contract. He got WAY more rope than KPJ did and I’m not sure that was fair or the right move.

That said, this is a HUGE summer for the Cavaliers and will determine Koby’s future here. I think he’s gonna try to make a splash to make the Cavaliers relevant again, which Gilbert really wants. I’m not in favor of it, but I expect a trade up to #1 for Cade and/or a trade for a veteran. Something big is gonna happen for sure

Love is a vet who put in his time in this league (street cred if you will), won a title and during his fight with SXs did not lash out at teammates and coaches.

Garland most likely got called up to be a placeholder for Jrue Holiday. I don't think that means he is next in line if Holiday drops out. I think they wanted someone that was similar enough to act like Holiday when they are figuring out rotations.

If Holiday drops out I assume they have a short list of guys who will get called up. There is most likely a hard deadline for guys to decide and if no one firmly comes in Garland might get the spot. Covid rules for the Olympics probably doesn't leave much time for flexibility.

I don’t disagree. I just disagree with the length of the deal and how much money they gave him. It was a risk, considering Love’s injury history and that he is really a complimentary piece. It was the move of a franchise & owner that was desperately trying to remain relevant, after its best player had left.

We need to keep our young cornerstones. Allen isn't easily replaceable. Sexton put up all star caliber numbers this year.

They're just scratching the surface of their potential.

In the pantheon of Cavs GMs, Altman is below Wayne Embry and Griff, but may be above the others. He’s done a solid job with the rebuild even though Lady Luck had mostly not been kind. I think we will challenge for the play in next year.
