LaRussa punishing rookie for.. hitting a home run?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I was always told if the manager gives you a take sign then you take. If he gives you a bunt sign then you bunt. To me, it isn’t the issue of swinging 3-0. It is ignoring a take sign because you don’t agree with it. I side with LaRussa here.

Why are we assuming there was a "take" sign???

Also, if La Russa actually instructed his hitter to take a pitch when it's in the 9th inning of a blowout with a position player on the mound, he's a way bigger asshole disrespecting everyone in that stadium and delaying the game than his player who swung at the pitch.

Y'know, I've never heard of a batter actually getting a "Take sign" on a 3-0 pitch. Did LaRussa really do that?
I do know that Tito has heartily endorsed 3-0 swings this season.

I do agree that LaRussa should bench his leading hitter, and anyone else who doesn't seem to fit into 1970's baseball.

I'm of a split mind on this......On one hand, I'm firmly in the "if you don't want the other team to demolish you, get better" camp and not the "hamstring the good team" camp.

But, this is slightly different. This is sticking the Punter in to play Cornerback and the QB continually throwing deep to the 1st String WR who he's covering even though he's leading 50-0.

This is the G-League guard having to play Center because of bizarre circumstances and having Shaq continually dunk on him.

Yeah, it's with in the game.....but it's just not sporting.

It's not like those examples at all.

Your examples are team sports that play against the clock. It is fair to simply let time expire in those games.

This game does not have a clock. The team batting can't just forfeit their AB's. You need three outs to move on to the next inning, and every stat accumulated will matter. So, swing away. Put the ball in play. Get the AB over with as quickly as possible. It's far less sporting to take a walk and draw out the game. How is it "better" to show up an outfielder who came in to pitch by making him walk you in a blowout and showing off to everyone that the dude can't throw strikes?

But if you actually want to bring up "sporting" then why are the Twins bringing in a position player to pitch when they have five unused bullpen arms?

Maybe we should institute a mercy rule so nobody gets their feelings hurt in a loss

Let's combine it with the "baseball is too long" problem. If there is at least a 2.00 difference in ERA between the projected starting pitchers, don't even play the game.

"Swing at anything you can reach" has always seemed to me to be the thing to do in a white-flag blowout. You're really not worried because It's Over, and isn't that the whole point?
Correct. Go up there and hack away and get our asses to the parking lot. I have a problem with the count reaching 3-0 in the first place.
