Markkanen was great last night.
With that said I think Utah is making a huge mistake if they don't at least try to get in the Victor sweepstakes. They've been outhustling teams the first few games but ultimately you need a #1 guy to win in the playoffs. Eventually the hustle isn't going to work as well once playoff teams get serious after the holidays.

Utah has always been good about finding talent later in the draft.

They are playing the heck out of Olynyk, Clarkson, and Beasley because they want one last trade marketing push. Olynyk is a Purple Heart tank commander from the Houston tank and Ainge favorite.

It's like when the Cavs wanted to move the veterans post-LBJ to the Lakers. They aren't done collecting assets.

By the deadline, I believe all three will be gone. Jazz would love to move Conley but at least he is providing leadership for the next rebuild with Lauri and Sexton.

No matter how good Markkanen is playing even he can be on the trade block because of Ainge. From what I have heard Ainge loves to build teams from the draft so if someone offers enough for Markkanen he could be traded. He still has really good contract to be used as asset.

The jury is very much out on whether we overpaid in this trade

I think Mitchell is a bonafide superstar so I don't think we overpaid. But we still have a glaring hole at the 3 spot that someone like Lauri would have been amazing in with this team.

Guess who made the Top 10 Plays of the Night?

There’s a limit to what it makes sense to give even for a superstar. Mitchell is not the kind of superstar who can carry a solid but not great roster to the Finals, so it’s all about whether we preserved enough talent and opportunities to improve to compete at the highest level. Obviously we got the single best player in the trade but we’ll see over the next year or two whether that was enough

You give the 2-3 role players you need to give to get a top 20 player in his prime that you have under contract for several years while you’re in contention.

There are very few guys in the league that can make the full gamut of plays Mitchell made in game 1 alone.

The way he splits the defense, gets to the hoop, makes plays for other guys, finishes, leads, hits outside shots, and gets to the line is a very rare combination.

Three quarters does not a dollar make. Happy as hell to have him after watching that first game. He wowed the shit out of me like LeBron used to 4-5 times.

Yeah, I think it just highlights the challenge of being a GM, especially on a young team with a lot of talent. OKC is the perfect example. There’s a lot to consider, particularly with how contracts lineup and managing the luxury tax before you’re a true contender.

I also think there’s a decent chance the Cavs believe Mobley will play PF his whole career and not eventually move to C like many of thought, meaning if the Cavs saw Lauri as a PF long-term he just didn’t have as much value. It’s also unlikely they would’ve kept Lauri, Mobley, and Allen long-term anyway when all three would’ve been eligible for new contracts or extensions within one year of each other.

Unless our draft picks to Utah end up being early lotto, I don't think we gave up anything that puts this team in a better situation to compete for a title than Mitchell. To me really the biggest loss was Lauri but I think if we trade for an average size SF who can hit a 3 and defend with some level of success (our Trevor Ariza) then I'd miss Lauri far less. Mitchell had two 50 point playoff games and is averaging 24 PPG in the playoffs.

The main problem with this trade is it means we have to rely on LeVert, Okoro, Wade, Stevens, Cedi or Windler to be able to string good games together as a small forward... The fact that Mitchell had to guard Siakam because we have no one capable of guarding someone who is 6'9 and strong while there are other tall players on the floor is hilarious.

Um, we have a superstar to watch.

This thread will fall by the wayside soon enough.
