What’s irritating is that he liked it in CLE. Felt like we could have made that trade happen without flipping him or at minimum getting Bojan as well.

Good read on how big of effect that trade had on Markkanen.

Damnit man. I just wish we could've kept Lauri while still getting Mitchell. He liked it here, which is always awesome, and he's really coming into his own now.

If I’m Utah I’m not doing that trade without Ochai, and Lauri so it is what it is.

Mitchell has been insane so i don’t miss either

Haha. Well, our package was considerably better. RJ is one if the worst contracts in the league and those 2 picks or whatever would end in the late first round. When you compare the deals in retrospect, ours was by far better. Jazz breathe a sigh of relief.

No matter how much I love Lauri , I think he is gonna, regress back to the mean. Its hard for him to maintain this level of play for 82 games. His effort and athletic capabilities don't hold up with that tough schedule.

I actually disagree on this.

When i see Lauri, i see a guy that can average 20 ppg, just needs the minutes.

When he was here i was always in the game threads praising his surprisingly good defense and shot making ability.

I just thought he was redundant with Love which took minutes away from him and he wasn’t fed the ball as much as i thought he should’ve been. We’d go whole quarters with him as an afterthought.

So this is what it looks like when a team needs him.

While all of this sucks and is annoying, it points to one solid thing. Cleveland is a good place to live and the team is building a good cultural fit for players.

Free agents need to see that.

Cleveland or Utah are great places for pros that do not have to run around in strip bars or have some swag life. I would target to sign or trade stars that have families. I do not remember which one of them could be that fit Cavs timeline...

Especially since Mitchell seems to be working out so fantastically people get annoyed when you second guess the trade in any way, but I agree it feels like there was a possibility for us to do better by keeping Lauri. I always think we shouldn’t be afraid to call for excellence from the front office the same way we demand excellence of the team/players. Is it so unrealistic that they could have gotten Mitchell for one of the largest packages of future draft picks/recent draftees ever traded in the entire history of the NBA, without also throwing in a high quality starter entering his prime on an excellent contract? I guess we’ll never know but it doesn’t seem impossible to me

I would say his peak potential if a team relied on him for offense would be like 23-25 ppg. For example, if he was shooting 35% from 3 right now instead of 27% he’d be averaging 23 ppg this year. We’ll see if it keeps up

I feel for our Finnish supporters, who had found a second sports home here last season watching their big guy.

It’s a superstar league. And watching Donovan Mitchell give me “ghost of LeBron“ type stardom-potential vibes, I don’t undo that deal once in a hundred.

Deal doesn't happen without him.
This is only partially true. The Jazz would have done the deal if the Cavs included any of their existing “big 3” of Allen, Garland or Mobley. The Cavs rightly made those guys untouchable. If we had relented there we could have kept Lauri, but that would have been insane on our side.

We absolutely made the right call in acquiescing to give up Lauri to get Mitchell.
