Leadership Specialist Tyrod Taylor

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I thought Tyrod played well enough to win that game yesterday under those circumstances. I was there and I have no doubt that he had to overcome inept coaching to win that game.

What the fuck was that shit yesterday? I mean from watching them live I got the sense that all of the players showed up and came to play and the coaches did not.

Tyrod should perform better in a weather controlled dome and against a defense that was just lit up by the Jameis Winston-less Buccs. I don't think he manages to finish the game if he keeps taking hits like he did yesterday though

Was reading some articles on Taylor over the past year. Think it was obvious that he does not try and force any balls. But he also takes no chances and appears he prefers to run instead of throwing into a tight window. They claim he holds the ball too long and is a much better qb when facing a zone defense. With one down, it will be interesting to see his performance next week.

This team has the talent to win 8-10 games but the coaching staff will keep them at about 5-6 wins.

I *completely* disagree with Klass on his assessment here. The chip blocks might not have been overly effective, but Taylor has almost 5 full seconds from snap to sack.

Maybe guys aren't open down the field, but Tyrod's internal clock just has to be quicker. If he's going to continue to hold onto the ball this long, the Browns are going to lead the league in sacks allowed by a wide margin.

Absolutely. And if he steps up in the pocket, he buys himself another 2 seconds.

Taylor was terrible in this game and made our line look much worse than they are.

His arm looks really weak to me. Maybe it was the rain and small hands...don't know. But judging from what I saw yesterday, the issue appears to be lots of throws you'd want a QB to make require him to "force" the ball...most windows are "tight" due to his arm strength. He plays like he knows this...

Hes smart enough to know his limitations. But if he is ever going to be more than an average QB, he needs to learn how to threaten a defense in the intermediate range.

Also, the guy is a disaster in non-perfect weather conditions. I expect a decent game in NO. Will it be enough?! We'll see

I went back and watched all 7 sacks...

Sack 1

1st and 10 from the CLE 14 with 7:39 to go in the 1st Q. Taylor under center. Hyde in the backfield. Callaway wide left. Landry slot right. Higgins wide right. Higgins comes in motion and settles in behind the LOS. Play action right. Steelers rush 4 and spy with Watt. Browns create a good pocket. Steelers play man-to-man with two deep safeties over the top. Landry is double covered on a square in. Callaway is double covered on a sluggo. Higgins is solo covered on a shallow cross. There isn't much open here at all, but the right read looks to be checking down to Hyde for a 1-2 yard gain. Taylor looks at Callaway way too long (needs to recognize it's double coverage quicker) and ends stepping up into late interior pressure.

Taylor spins off the initial hit, but Watt rushes up to complete the sack. Watt gets flagged for unnecessary roughness on the hit. The play and sack count, but 15 yards for the illegal hit gives the Browns a first down.

Screen Shot 2018-09-11 at 10.58.02 AM.png

Time from snap to initial contact: approximately 3.9 seconds

Time from snap to sack: approximate 6.9 seconds

Sack Credit: Taylor for holding the ball too long.

Sack 2
2nd and 10 from the PIT 46 with 3:50 to go in the 2nd Q. Taylor under center. Chubb in the backfield. Landry slot left. Njoku wing left. Gordon wide right. Steelers rush 5, sending RILB Bostic on a blitz. Chubb inexplicably slides to Taylor's right instead of his left and completely blows his assignment. Taylor is sacked immediately. Njoku was breaking wide open over the middle for what would have been a big gain.

Screen Shot 2018-09-11 at 11.04.36 AM.png

Time from snap to sack: approximately 2.0 seconds

Sack Credit: Chubb for failed blitz pick up.

Sack 3
2nd and 16 from the CLE 49 with 0:37 to go in the 2nd Q. Taylor in shotgun. Duke flanked to his left in the backfield. Landry wide left. Gordon wide right. Higgins slot right. Njoku TE right. Steelers rush 4. Njoku comes open immediately in the right flat for a 6-7 yard gain. Ball probably needs to come out there. Taylor, to his credit, is looking downfield at Gordon on the deep in. Right as Gordon is coming open Taylor is hit from the blindside by Dupree and fumbles. Browns recover.

Screen Shot 2018-09-11 at 11.06.19 AM.png

Time from snap to sack: approximately 3.3 seconds

Sack Credit: Harrison for being beat 1 on 1 by Dupree. Blame also on Taylor for not throwing to Njoku immediately.

Sack 4

1st and 10 from the CLE 14 with 14:54 to go in the 3rd Q. Taylor under center. Hyde in the backfield. Gordon wide left. Landry wide right. Njoku wing left. Fells wing right. Steelers rush 7 on a big blitz. OL gets 5 hats on hats. Hyde picks up an interior blitz. Landry beats his man and comes open on a square in to the right, but Taylor is locked in on Gordon on a deep out left. Fells eventually gets wrecked by Watt and Taylor is sacked.

Screen Shot 2018-09-11 at 11.08.10 AM.png

Time from snap to sack: approximately 3.1 seconds

Sack credit: Fells for being beat 1 on 1 by Watt. Blame also on Haley for putting Fells in a very difficult matchup and on Taylor for staring down Gordon when Landry beat 1 on 1 coverage on the other side of the field.

Sack 5

3rd and 12 from the CLE 19 with 6:53 to go in the 3rd Q. Taylor in shotgun. Duke flanked to his right in the backfield. Higgins wide right. Gordon wide left. Landry slot left. Njoku tight left. Steelers rush 4. Higgins is covered 1 on 1 on a deep out. Duke chips Watt and releases into the flat, but he's covered 1 on 1. Njoku is covered 1 on 1 in the left flat. Gordon is double covered on the outside left. Landry runs a post from the slot and has the slot corner completely turned the wrong direction. As you can see in the screenshot, TAYLOR HAS TO PULL THE TRIGGER ON THIS PASS. Instead Taylor holds the ball another beat, panics at left side pressure allowed by Harrison, which forces him to hold the ball ANOTHER beat and Watt gets around Hubbard for the sack.

Screen Shot 2018-09-11 at 10.44.25 AM.png

Time from snap to sack: approximately 4.0 seconds

Sack Credit: Taylor for holding the ball too long. Hubbard getting beat AFTER Duke chips is poor, but Taylor had more than enough time to complete this throw and just couldn't pull the trigger.

Sack 6
2nd and 4 from the CLE 36 with 11:47 to go in the 4th Q. Taylor in shotgun. Hyde in the backfield. Higgins wide left. Gordon wide right. Landry slot left. Steelers rush 4. Higgins easily covered 1 on 1 on the left. Gordon double covered on the wide right. Njoku and Landry both caught up in traffic over the middle. No one really open down the field. Considering it's 2nd and short, the right play seems to be checking down to Hyde for 0-1 yards rather than losing 11 on a sack. Massive failures along the OL as Hubbard and Zeitler both get beat badly. Taylor tries to roll away from the pressure to the left, but Harrison can't keep his block and Taylor is easily dropped by Heyward.

Screen Shot 2018-09-11 at 11.35.22 AM.png

Time from snap to sack: approximately 4.1 seconds (pressure came much earlier)

Sack Credit: Hubbard and Zeitler. Harrison's man got the sack, but Heyward just cleaned up the mess that Hubbard and Zeitler created. Taylor gets some blame for lacking awareness of down and distance and needlessly creating a third and long situation when he could have checked down and kept it it 3rd and short.

Sack 7

2nd and 10 from the CLE 19 with 4:57 to go in sudden death overtime. Taylor under center. Hyde in the backfield. Gordon wide right. Landry wide left. Fells tight left. Njoku wing left. Play action to the left with a designed rollout to the right. Njoku pulling from the left into a route into the flats. Steelers rush 4. Taylor can dump it off to Njoku for 1-2 yard gain, but instead opts to just run and runs out of bounds for a 1-yard loss.

Screen Shot 2018-09-11 at 11.41.55 AM.png

Time from snap to sack: approximately 6.5 seconds

Sack Credit: Taylor for holding the ball too long. He didn't have any great options on the throw, but he could have dumped the ball to Njoku for a short gain or simply thrown it away.

------------

I put three sacks completely on Taylor. One on Chubb. One on Fells and two on the offensive line.

If you really want to be harsh on Taylor, you could put the Fells sack and both OL sacks on him for not checking down. Those completions would have been for minimal gains, but that is always preferable to eating a sack when you don't have to.

The one with Chubb sticks out to me the most. That was had me livid because Njoku had at least a 20 yard gain coming there and I can't understand why they even have Chubb in there in that situation. Why not have Hyde in to make that block? Why put Chubb in that spot. This coaching staff reaffirmed their ineptness when Chubb almost hit the ball on that punt return to which I ask again why the hell is Nick Chubb in there in that spot?

If you had to sum up one play, as to why Baker should be playing, it is sack 5 to me. That is just miserable.

Clean pocket, LB's vacate the middle of the field and he can't see the slot completely nailing his man to the ground. Ugh. You have to rip off an easy 20 yards there.

Whoever the outside receiver (Higgins?) similarly has his man turned around on the deep out. A play where 3 of the 4 receivers have won and he takes a sack because he can't get off his initial read, which is covered.

Pretty hard to blame Nick Chubb for a short punt in the rain that skips up and hits him.

Callaway is yelling, but I can’t imagine it’s easy to hear a damn thing, especially when you’re not expecting a ball only 25-30 yards down field.

So damn depressing that he’s our QB and saddled with a god awful coaching staff

Why is Nick Chubb blocking gunners on Special teams when he's shown multiple times that he struggles picking up the blitz? Are you telling me we don't have a single DB on the squad who can fill that role and our rookie 3rd string RB has to do it?
