Minor League Game Thread 5/8-5/14

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Well recap of today's game...

Columbus lost 10-9... Offense was pretty solid led by Palacios, Naylor and a big HR by OGonz...

Oviedo and Herrin though both had really bad outings...

Akron won 12-6... A much needed offensive output! Martinez, Lava, Holland and Gabby all had 2 hits... everyone else had one but Naranjo had a hit. Holland got a HR with one man on, Lava got 3 RBIs, Bracho got 2 himself... Cantillo though had a bad night... Benton though had a good night, which he needed...

Lake County lost 4-1... Lampe is in a bit of a slump, let's see how he adjusts back. LC didn't have much to talk about today... outside of a good outing from the pen by Abney...

Lynchburg is tied 1-1 in the tenth when I started writing this... Peterson had a good start, Jacob had a good outing out of the pen but Rapp blew the save...

Edit: Top of the 10th Furman got a single that scored two runs! Rapp blew the lead in the 9th, but came back in the 10th and got the win!

Any info on Peterson?

Also opinion... Holland a fluke or did he find something? He's hit so far since he got to Akron this season...

For the info of everyone this week (from GuardsInsider twitter account)

This Cantillo fella seems a bit wild. 4 walks last night, 12 walks in 19 innings so far this year. That’s concerning.

A little bit but we were warned that he has as good as stuff as our Big 3 but behind in development. He was 4:1 in K:W earlier in his career. Sometimes, guys get supposedly more wild as they move up due to better umps but same location. Yet, if I remember the warning, it was needing refinement as he grows into his body (similar to Bibee needing to control increase in speed on his FB). He ain't getting called up this year. So expect some of these setbacks as it is his growth and focus on his 11-13+ K per 9 rate. (Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if Guard FO talked to him again with all the other promotions and laid out what he needed to follow a Bibee and Allen up to MLB and Williams to AAA -- thus he may have focused on a certain pitch last night as MILB is more about development than the win).

True. If he is throwing harder and his stuff is moving more I’m sure that takes time to refine and get used to, and he hasn’t exactly logged a ton of innings to do just that yet.

And clearly he has good stuff. He’s almost putting on a free runner every inning he pitches but he still has a microscopic ERA, thanks in large part to gaudy strikeout numbers. You don’t do that without excellent stuff.

Joey Cantillo = has a total of around 250 total innings pitched in the last four or five years.. The littany of injuries/maladies/aches/pains have kept him off the mound for competitive baseball. That's the recipe for "rust" Prior to being drafted, he had a strong history of strike throwing.. For a pitcher coming off multiple injured list stints.. control and command are typically the most difficult ability to reacquire.

Cantillo should be fine..

When you say "called up" do you mean Cleveland? If so, then I probably agree with that if everyone remains healthy. However, I do think he'll be pitching in Columbus before too long. Personally, I'd like to see Cantillo and Burns replace Scott and Norris, but that's just me.

From what Bimbo was stating between the injuries and body changes, he is going to have some ups and downs like TMac did in a sense a few seasons ago...

Honestly in 23, he is not likely to be a starter for the big league club if he gets the call up sometime this season (unless it's for a double header). Plus with his arm, even if he doesn't make it as a starter, he should be a very good reliever on paper...

Scott and Norris are pure depth guys and for pitching, as long as you are at AA or higher, you can get really similar work in... I'm not too worried if they don't have them at AA, but in the second half of the season, I wouldn't be surprised to see both at AAA since guys like Norris, Touki etc could get released/traded to a team that needs them...

The Columbus game is also FREE to watch today for those who are interested!!!

I thought it was a 6 oclock game so was going to watch tonight.

Just saw a little -- but 5-2/3rd inn, 2 hits, 2 walks, 1 ER/HR and just 10Ks ... just your ho-hum performance from the 14th best prospect.

I am trying to watch, but that shaky cam is really driving me nuts.
