MLB 2022 regular season thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It seems like they limited numbers of step offs/pick off moves has been implemented for next season...

That is a huge mistake for baseball... There is a flaw in the rule where guys can just take a base once they get that third step off...

I am an old traditionalist, but I am willing to see how these changes play out on the field.

In the past, I have been anti DH, but changed my mind as pitcher ABs became almost
automatic outs and they never bother to learn bunting due to HR fever.

I was unsure about the ghost runner in extra innings but I am now a fan of it. Shortens
games( I think I was at one in the old Stadium that went 15 or 16 innings. By the end, the
ushers and vendors well out-numbered paying customers.

I believe the ghost gives both teams a chance to score, no HR required.

I like pitch clock and limiting batters stepping out of the box.

I'm not opposed to change, but not all change is good. Limiting the number of throws to 1B makes no sense whatsoever. So the runner will either get a big enough lead to easily swipe 2B or have a green light after the 2nd attempt. I don't see how that adds value.

Not a fan of the ghost runner at all and I'd like to see how much it has actually shortened games.

The pitch clock and limiting batters stepping out doesn't change the dynamics of the game. It's just making more efficient use of time which I'm in favor of.

I could understand two throw overs and a pitch to home plate resetting to zero, but two in an at bat seems on the low end for speedy or intelligent players. Inch off medium leads for two throw overs and then take a longer lead of another step or two daring the pitcher to throw over a third time.

Once that third time happens though, the pitcher cannot step off again... The base stealers can walk to the next base after that.

Teams with young, fast OFers who specialize in getting on base are going to clean up with these new rules. Hopefully the Gs can find one for CF.

If Straw was back to taking walks (at his normal career numbers) they already have it..

I'm confused. A pitcher doesn't have to step off the rubber to throw to first base (or any base really). But if he steps off he can check a runner without a throw. But I would imagine that should still count against the 20 second clock. How does the step off rule limit throws to first? (I admit I haven't read the rule so go easy on me.)

Isn't the new rule the pitcher is charged with a balk if he is unsuccessful with the third attempt? The first two attempts are result of the play. If the third attempt is unsuccessful, the runner(s) gets the next base.

I read it from the thing, that pitcher has the throw on the third time and cannot actually throw again after that. If they do its the balk, but I could have read it wrong as well...

But either way, it feels like, the runners can get enough step offs/throws to essentially get a base without a throw in my mind....

From the ESPN article...

By limiting disengagements with the mound, either via pickoff move or step-off, the rules hold accountable pitchers who would otherwise have a pitch-clock workaround -- and are likely to significantly increase stolen bases, part of the action MLB intended to increase.

Pickoffs and step-offs reset the pitch clock, and the rules will limit pitchers to two for each plate appearance. (The number would reset if a runner advances.) A pitcher can make a third pickoff attempt, but if it's unsuccessful it will be a balk, allowing the runners to move up a base

....

To me that's a bad idea... I'm drawing the pitchers attention/throws until that time, then I am taking the base... I could do that myself and I am a keyboard warrior that played some baseball...

Thanks for the explanation. I'm not sure how this will play out, although I suspect it won't be as controversial in practice once teams figure it out. OTOH, if it puts a premium on speed, base stealing, and catcher defense we should be well positioned to take advantage of it IMO.
