MLB 2023 Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Can you stop teasing us and at least list the names and why they liked them!!!! Feeling a little blue:falloff::falloff:, could use some good news (but don't subscribe). Don't leave others hanging as well....

Only unsigned picks are the prep pitchers selected in the 16th round & the 20th round.

I hear there is under $2,300 of the overage pool remaining (until a draft pick for next season is lost) so its doubtful those remaining guys sign before the deadline next week.

I am not super duper worried about them not signing, but then again, we have had some luck of late that the HS guys we don't sign actually turning good lol (Aka Strider and Steer)...

Guardians signed first rounder Ralphy Velazquez and second rounder Alex Clemmey earlier this evening, per MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis (Twitter links). Velazquez, a prep catcher from California, was the 23rd overall selection in this year’s draft and signed for $2,500,000. That number clocks in well below the 23rd pick’s slot value of $3,380,900. Velazquez receives universal praise for his power production, though opinions vary on his ability to stick at catcher and his hit tool. Those differences of opinion create some discrepancies in where Velazquez ranks among this class’s draft prospects, with Baseball America ranking him as high as #29 in the class while Fangraphs has him as low as #45. The savings on Velazquez allowed Cleveland to sign Clemmey, a high school pitcher whose #58 overall selection came with a slot value of $1,402,600, to an overslot deal worth $2,300,000. As a left-handed prep prospect with a fastball touching 100 mph, Clemmey’s stuff garners near universal praise, though he also earns widespread questions regarding his command due to an inconsistent delivery. Overall, Clemmey is considered a top-50 prospect in this year’s draft class by most services, though Fangraphs has him as low as #62

This overslot signing bonus stood out to me.

7 (218): Alex Mooney, SS, Duke
Pick value: $231,300
Signing bonus: $1,000,000

Depending on who you talk to, quite a few people view the good college top to bottom baseball conferences (SEC, ACC, Big 12, PAC 12) as the equivalent of Low A ball or a slightly lesser league, especially Friday’s through Sunday’s.

A 20 year old who beat up on conference pitching at an A level or step above complex league competition is going to be an expensive sign.

What position do you think Mooney will play or will he move around/be an utility guy? I am doubting he will stick at SS in the long run with our farm system...

Before Alex Mooney went to Duke..

Position versatility is well noted... As an incredible athlete with high character.. developing his LF/CF capability is probably in his best interest & long term defensive spot.. Truth be told.. his path to the big leagues comes from that short quick bat to ball ability.. Where ever he plays with a glove on his hand, he'll be fine..

Hence why I feel like he may end up being the best pick from this draft, getting a high character guy that has a good floor in the 7th round, may end up helping us out in the long run... I wonder if he will see any time at Lynchburg this season?
