MLB 2023 Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Reviewing this draft, how would we rank these picks - not in terms of our overall Top 30, but just ranking the picks, perhaps a Top 10...

Tough to rank based on value/signing bonus/round

I believe Walters and Kayfus are the safest bets/highest floor to reach the Majors.

Tommy Hawke value was pretty good. Wilkinson too.

A bit disappointed they couldn't sign two of the HS arms. Mooney screwed them.

Eh... I actually think Mooney was the most important to sign. He also is able to contribute way before any of the ones we lost. I feel like he may end up the biggest steal in the draft (Aka have 1st/2nd round type of production yet got in the 8th) hopefully we didn't miss out on a Strider...

hmmm....

The guy I liked of the later rounds...

LHP Jacob Bresnahan 18 years old, # 368 overall; Signed for late 5th round money to forego commitment to Oregon, 6'4" / 195; Fastball (90-92)/Downer Curveball and Tumbling Change Up.. Throws all his pitches for strikes & has a lean & wiry frame that, upon maturity, should provide added velo and spin. Simple & clean mechanics portend even better command and control, especially with his change up. Has pitched to a 5:1 K/BB ratio. Perhaps the steal of the MLB draft for the Guardians.

Thoughts?

What are everyone’s thoughts on the Guardians not signing P Mac Huerer? I thought he was one of the more high upside guys they took, so it surprised me to see them take a kid who didn’t sign. The fact the Guardians took 2 was really a shock.

I think CLE liked both guys that they did not sign but not enough to lose their 1st round pick in the 2024 draft. To meet all the signing demands, that would have been in the next penalty level.

Btw: if CLE does not make the postseason this year, there is a solid chance their pick will be in the top 10 (due to lottery & repeater/ over cap rules (impacting others) rules ).

Man I understand it’s smart to look ahead but this roster will look entirely different 1,000 years from now so I think that was foolish of them to look that far ahead.

We gonna switch the year to 2024 and keep this thread rolling or fire up a brand new thread?

Gonna be picking somewhere between 7-12 and it will be nice to have quicker access to premium talent in the first few rounds.

Who are the early favorites?

And for those who really study the draft, what teams historically in the past 5 years draft similar profiled players? Would be nice if most if the teams ahead of us had different approaches(I know in the end talent is talent) and let some of the players who are left at the top of the board each round reset fall to us instead of going 4-8 picks ahead of us

Generally its a new thread...
New draft thread..
New Minor league thread...
New items once the calendar actually rolls into 2024...

Question for everyone following the draft way more than me: why does Nolan Schanuel have 0 power so far at the mlb level? Is it just the crazy fast transition to the MLB and small sample size, or what?

Bottom-tier exit velo, barrel, max ev, hard hit/barrel %, .055 iso, you name it.

I'm no expert on Schanuel (and please someone who knows more about him please weigh in) but the way I understand him is that he sees the ball so well that he really has little to gain from developing in the minors further. I doubt he'd be rushed up in an organization like Cleveland but he's got a mature approach way beyond his years and hasn't figured out the "how to damage a baseball" part nearly as well but with comfort against big league pitching he may be able to tap into more power. It's just so rare to see guys on his schedule...
