Myles Garrett : NFL 2023 DPOY

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I love that folks are leaning into this script convo...if Arian Foster really where this started?

I don't think Malik Jackson is wrong.

Myles is absolutely elite on the field. 10/10, one of the most talented defensive ends we've ever seen. The best way for Myles to make our team better is by making other people better. If he grows into more of a leader--if he starts demanding more from the other guys on defense, leading by example, and holding people accountable, that should result in our defense improving.

Those aren't shots being levied against Myles--it's just saying what he can do to take that next step. He's already an absurd individual talent. Let's focus on making those less talented players around him into forces to be reckoned with.

Myles isn't much of a natural leader. I feel like we've learned that during his tenure here. But that's not an indictment on him...he is what he is, and he isn't what he isn't.

Leadership doesn't come naturally to him, and that's fine. He's not a vocal leader. And he isn't always a great lead by example guy, mostly because he's got physical gifts 99% of players in his position room could only dream of having. You wouldn't use him as a role model because his abilities are not replicable.

He's a damn good player who draws doubles and frees other guys up to be better. That's enough. The knock on him not being a leader has been exacerbated by a void of leadership on that side of the ball. But with Jim Schwartz here now, I don't think leadership will be as big an issue.

I don't view it as "an issue."

I view it as his biggest deficiency. If we were to make Myles Garrett's impact on this team even larger, how could we do it? Well, it's difficult to make him even better as an individual talent--so this would be the avenue to the greatest return.

I agree that it's not something that comes naturally to him and not something we should expect from him.
