Myles Garrett : NFL 2023 DPOY

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Players can't make every play.

Some plays they give 100% effort and dont succeed. Some plays they dont give much effort and don't succed.

Retroactively dissecting plays to figure out what *should* have happened feels like a fools errand to me. I can't say exactly what Myles should've done on any given play. What I can say, is if he really is the best DE in the game, a supposed DPoY, a captain on this team, a 99 on Madden, I need him to do some extraordinary shit every once in awhile. I need him to jump off the screen and execute when it means the most. Not every play. But *some* play. Not even necessarily a sack, but a strip...tackle for loss...batted ball...interception...SOMETHING. I cant remember Myles imposing himself on a game since Chicago last year. Meanwhile, I can remember moments from many other players around the League.

Myles needs to be held accountable for how the defense line is playing just as Ward with the backfield.

the downside of the youngest locker room in the league; no one is standing up and being a leader (vocally and/or performance)

It's pretty easy to just look at the boxscore and complain, or "not remember hearing his name being called."

I’m all for fair criticism, but watch this play. Watch it in slow motion. What is Myles not doing here? What should he be doing different?

One DT gets owned so hard that he's shoved into Clowney and gets in his way, the other DT runs straight up the field and gets blocked outside the hash mark, leaving absolutely no one in front of Herbert.

Myles completely beats his man. Severely, actually. Looks like he even gets his hand on Herbert. Myles forces Herbert to step up. Since our DTs aren't doing their job, Herbert has a clear lane to step up and run. If just one of our DTs are doing their job on this play and force Herbert to hesitate at all, he has nowhere to go and Myles likely gets a sack.

How can both your DTs wind up outside the hash marks when they both lineup inside? That's just shitty line play.

This was happening all game. I'm sure you can pinpoint times where Myles fucked up, but I just don't know what people expect him to do here. It's like getting pissed at a QB when his receivers drop 20 passes.
You showed one play. It wasn’t happening all game. Plenty of times the Chargers let Myles run free up field because they knew he has 0 interest in contain

Here’s what I expect from Myles: don’t be a black hole against the run. But honestly it’s pointless even trying in this thread. Myles gets LeBron first stint treatment. No matter what he can never be doing more

Why is Myles such a black hole against the run? Why does he consistently lose contain? Because the thing most important to him, by FAR, is his sack count. So why can’t fans hold him to the standard of what he abandons all other responsibilities to stack? Seems pretty fair

Myles is a superior athlete, but Clowney is better at being a well-rounded football player.

Myles is the something u dont often see. His physical ability to move and bend at 270 is unbelievable. Physically he is like Reggie White or Lawerence Taylor. I dont have any stats or data but it seems his game is not as good. Just from my eyes it seems he is lacking. Maybe my expectation is too high or maybe our defense puts him in position not to succeed as much as he should. It seems Pittsburgh gets more out of a healthy Watt than Browns do out of Garrett.

I need to find time to go thru all his sacks and see how many he got with different moves or just with outside speed and bend.

Anything about run defense?
I'm not sure I've ever seen someone chart "run defense wins." If so, it's probably going to be more like PFF grades for interior linemen where they should be taken with a truckload of salt. It's really difficult to watch a play, assume you know what a lineman's responsibilities are in the run fit, and grade him based off that.

I think it's safe to say that Myles likely doesn't score very high--especially for outside runs that attack the B-gap. Myles likes to get off the line and get upfield fast, usually making the B-gap incredibly wide.

Agreed and I think teams are taking advantage of this. At times when teams are abandoning the run and get pass happy, we can live with it. In times when the worst running team in the NFL can name their yardage, it’s probably time to reign it in a bit

The pass rushing metrics are great, but what does it even matter if we are the worst run defense in the nfl by a significant margin. That’s obviously not all on Myles, but he does play the pass first and foremost every down

It'll be interesting to see what happens this weekend.

I'm guessing that we'll see a gameplan from the Patriots that relies on the run and very little passing.

I'm expecting Myles to stay home and help out in the run fit. If he's running upfield and fucking us over multiple times in a row, I'm going to be very upset with him.

To answer your last question--because that's what matters. Passing wins games right now in the NFL, and you pay your edges to get to the QB.

From what we've watched this year, I don't think Myles has anything to do with our run defense sucking. No DT's, no linebackers, and dumb safeties have let guys rip off chunks at will.
