I'm looking to buy my own modem and router for my house. I need to cover 3 floors (basement, main and 2nd floor). 3 kids under the age of 12 so I have ipads, xboxes and other wireless devices that need to connect.

Any suggestions? Best place to buy? Best units for the money?

Nighthawk !
for the router
I always recommend when shopping for a router the value is in the features.

It should have AC, USB 3.0

If your on a budget you should get something like the asus arch.

TP has lower budget models too but I'm not familiar with the brand.

What speed Internet? Who with? Motorola / Arris tends to be the answer to the modem, but some models deal w/ more speed than others.

@Tornicade , any particular model? How would you recommend he extend the various zones he mentioned?

I'm using an Apple router/wap setup right now, and I've seen Google Wi-Fi looking pretty interesting too, but Nighthawks are getting good worth of mouth as well.

I would actually get a Belkin adaptor that goes through the power and set up an extender. router

I use one now

I was at Best Buy last night and the sales guy recommended this package

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/arris-surfboard-docsis-3-0-cable-modem-silver/7534146.p?skuId=7534146

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/linksys...i-system-3-pack-white/5709451.p?skuId=5709451

I have Dish Network for my cable so I use Windstream for as my ISP
Main issue with that setup that I see is that neither device has a USB connection so if you have USB device like a NAS. youll be out of luck or will have to set it up to run through the pc.

If you don't need any of type of usb network devices then it doesn't matter.

It also doesn't look very ipv6 friendly utilizing a bypass mode.. might want to check with Windstream

as far as speeds your only gonna get up to 25 mb and you need an ADSLmodem for DSL

most likely Windstream has ipv6 but I culdnt verify that. you may want to call them

if your shopping best buy and not amazon

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/cable-d...ms/pcmcat748302046323.c?id=pcmcat748302046323

is a list of DSL modems.

doing more reading on the velop system.. you might anna call Linksys and see if each node can have its own Network SSID. because it looks like it doesn't support active node switching which would be a problem if your using a device that you move around the house with a lot (like your cellphone)

@Tornicade Thanks for the input. I'm struggling to follow you on a lot of stuff because of 2 things 1. Technology can be confusing 2. Your grammar is so bad I struggle to read even a basic sentence from you. :chuckle:

Can anyone translate for me? also WTF is a NAS and why would I need it?

Dude do you want my arris modem? It's 16x8 and not 8x4 like the bestbuy guy wanted you to purchase. You can have mine for shipping only. I got fiber internet installed and no longer need it.

Are you using any HTPCs? Streaming video to the Xbox? Personally I like my home LAN to be as fast as possible, but that's limited to the devices you're using and they're capability.

The realities here are that most Wireless AC routers will generally suffice, you don't need to go crazy unless you're wanting that extra speed or range, etc.

As far as a modem... well, that's a different story.. largely depends on your provider. If you're on cable, you'll likely be looking at a Motorola device.

You've lost all credibility with me. I looked up to you, ya know? smh

What about high speed cable like up to 150 to 200 mbps? I have Xfinity from Comcast and would like to get out from underneath the expensive trap of renting a box for internet.

Ok this is what I have according to Windstream
Modem that can accommodate 10 Mbps
ADSL2
PPTOE Configuration

Ok, RCF what do I need to buy?

I agree. I need some help as well. I have been looking but afraid to pull the trigger on a new one. I know I dont need the top of the line, as even a cheap is better then what I have. My goal is to get distance as well. I like to be able to listen to music over Wifi when outside. I have 50Mbps service right now, on a half acre, 2 story house, with a basement.
