New Modem and Router

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Bumping this again...

So I now know the modem I need but I need to make a decision on the wifi mesh system. I have 3 kids under 12. Ipads, Xbox, 2 smart tvs, 3,000 sq ft house with a basement and 2nd floor. What should I go with?

Linksys Velop
Google
Orbi
Eero
Luma

Any recommendations?

The Wifi Mesh systems are kinda new.
if there isn't any cost difference you should look at features.
the Netgear Orbi has AC. and has USB 2.0
Luma has 3900 mb speed and AC looks like its on sale.
Linksys Velop has parental controls like the luma and covers 6 thousand square feet also on sale .. higher price point
The eEro model I saw just seemed inferior
The gogole wifi is reportedly not as efficient as the other brands. this could lead to slower online speeds on the Xbox.
so if Internet gaming speed is a big deal.

I would go with the Luma

All 5 systems should have online reviews.

I have a single level house and not the coverage requirements that phils has.

currently I have a zuxel pk5001Z and an ancient D link dir 825.

I was thinking about going with this set up

Draytek Vigor 130 ADSL/VDSL modem wired by Draytek
This comes out to about 200 bucks.

My aim is to improve connections with my Playon server and set up a game emulater library on the usb

Any thoughts ? It would probably be cheaper to upgrade the zyxel and go with one of the combo devices.

The DSL hasn't been upgraded to fiber yet but I want to make the most of the connection I do have.

I am thinking right now most of my streaming issues are more to do with the network than the overall connection speed.

DSL is the only option I have at this time. no broadband options available.

Any advice on how to improve my stream quality on my Xbox for Sling TV. I can't get a decent stream for these playoff games.

I used SlingTV for awhile, and that was a common occurrence for me. I had better luck going straight to ESPN and/or TNT to stream vs going through the Sling app itself. This was on my PC, I'm not sure if you have the direct channel route from an Xbox or not.

It seemed like anything that drew high traffic, Sling would crap out on me.

Do you have DSL or Cable? if so what is the speed?
Is the Xbox wired in or on wifi?
have you tried casting to the Xbox instead?
Also you may be able to try using the channel app directly.
My internet company recommends resetting the modem 2 or 3 times a a week to clear the cache.
Edit

Doesn't look like you can use app authentication for TNT
App authentication:

  • CNBC (iOS, Android, Airplay, Apple TV)
  • E! Now (iOS, Android Mobile and Tablet, Amazon Fire, Roku, Airplay Apple TV)

Whatever UVerse is what I have for internet. 18 up/3 down are my speeds.
I've done both wired and wireless.
I usually reset once a week, I'll start resetting more often. Thanks @Tornicade

If you have uverse what do you need sling TV for?

I don't have cable, just internet.
Uverse is att so it sounds like DSL.

Here is some things you can try if you haven't done so already.

I've had plenty of issues with the XBox One and Sling... But recently I have found a work around to make the app not as bad.

  1. Give the XBox One a static IP address in your router (Preferred but not completely necessary)
  2. In your Router turn on DMZ and point it to the XBox One IP
  3. In Sling settings set the bandwidth to "Good", I was running unlimited and found that the next best setting worked great.
I would suggest reading up on DMZ as it bypasses your firewall before using it but Iprefer assigning static Ip router addresses for my non mobile devices.

Bump!

I’m looking for a new router setup for them home. I currently have a Apple Time Capsule/Router. It’s about 10 years old, but the connection isn’t strong throughout the house and drops connection a lot.
I have a small house, 1 story, about 1800 feet total.
I was looking at getting the Google Nest and maybe one additional access point. Anyone have any advice?
We have a TON of devices. 4 TVs, 3 cell phones, 3 iPads, XBOX X and all sorts of shit.

Nothing beats a dedicated router and dedicated access points. I always recommend picking up the cheapest thin client you can find, adding a network card if you have to, and installing PFSense to take care of your routing needs, then using ubiquiti access points.

I ha e tp-link deco ac1200 (2 of them) I got on sale for $70 and works fine on 2200 2 story.

I’ve had good luck with the eero mesh setup. Wired back haul connections where you can will extend your max wifi speeds. I’ve got good wifi on the patio and in the backyard now.

Just spent over $500 on a new set up at Best Buy that is still in the box (bought last weekend):

Netgear AC 1750 Modem
Netgear Nighthawk AC2300 Router
Eero wifi system

Need patio access, as wifi does not extend out there. Home office is in front corner, where the router/modem will be located.

Xfinity service. I did have some ethernet ports installed in some rooms 5 years ago when we built - will have to figure out if adding one of these eero pods to that makes it more efficient.

Open to thoughts - as I'm super close to having a professional come out to make this house smarter. At this point, all we have is a Ring doorbell and Alexa.
