(No Longer) Joe Woods’ Defense

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
And speaking of incompetent, it takes a certain level of horrific defense to allow a team to score touchdown drives of 83 yards, 99 yards, 95 yards and 92 yards, all in a single game. That really should not be possible in a NFL game, even with a bad defense. Something like that only happens if your guys stop trying, or you have guys completely out of position.
When was the last time this happened? Would anyone be shocked if it was the first time?

We have a dope secondary, the best linebacker in the NFL (JOK), and the sack leader across from a blue chip DE.
Straight up we were out of position and falling for everything they did. It was a clinic out there. Looked like a practice squad.
It was embarrassing. I turned it off at the half.
Woods can stay the season because you can’t rush the next hire. If he miraculously has us clicking and we make the AFC title game, ok fine we can reconsider.
But Berry needs to be back channeling a replacement and I highly doubt this team makes the playoffs.

The defense needs to be way more aggressive. Get on receivers, send blitzes, do everything you can to generate turnovers. It’s abundantly clear that sitting back and trying to count on these guys to be in the right places and make the right reads is simply not happening. The safeties have been shit. The LBs are shit. The line outside of Garrett has been disappointing.

Is there some kind of solace in being bludgeoned by 10 or 12 play drives instead of taking some chances and getting hit with some huge plays? Either way, it’s giving up points. At least one way you aren’t wearing guys out by having them on the field for 8 minutes.

I just don’t see any way this defense does anything positive unless they are forcing turnovers or bringing blitzes to heat the QB up.

Conceptually the thought is that the more plays they make an offense execute, the increased likelihood they'll do something to fuck things up - be it a penalty, a dropped pass, a blown blocking assignment, etc.

The worst part about this defense is that the Browns are actually getting opposing offenses to make those fuck ups regularly and are just giving up backbreaking third down conversions anyway!

Opening drive for the Patriots went 15 plays. They had plays go for 0 yards, 2 yards, -1 yards, no gain, a sack for -7 yards and a 10 yard holding penalty and they still scored a touchdown.

I really do believe Woods is likely playing out his hand and will be dismissed after the season. That's said, skipping over a few real personnel issues does t do much for planning out the future.

1. Love the cornerback room, but they will need to improve in zone concepts. There's a reason the Browns haven't employed a man-heavy coordinator since Gregg Williams, and Gregg is out of football.

2. Grant Delpit or LeCounte need to separate themselves as free safety, because Ronnie Harrison costs the team key stops when isolated in coverage. JJ3 is at his best playing in Harrison's role.

3. JOK needs to stay on the field to be considered a solid NFL starter, let alone the best linebacker in football. He played 21 out of 67 possible defensive snaps. I'm hoping the incredible potential is just about to be unleashed, he just wasn't on the field enough against the Patriots.

4. Jordan Elliott quietly surpassed Malik Jackson for snaps, but he wasn't very good either. The hole at defensive interior might be an opportunity in the off-season rather than a hole. If the Browns switch away from the predictability of Woods scheme, they could prioritize adopting a 3-3 scheme with makeovers at third linebacker and nose tackle.

That's all from me this week. I feel like I've been training a baby to take his first steps since August of 2020 and the toddler is still flopping around a fucking quilt on the floor.

The fact that the Pats were backed up at almost the go alone and he comes out in a damn Dime defense tells me all we need to know about Joe woods. He needs to go

So...it seems there's a pretty solid consensus that no one wants Joe Woods as defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns in 2022. The very important question becomes, who do you *realistically* want to replace him? Considering the roster investments, it makes sense to get a guy that runs a similar defense, no?

Gimme names to get excited about, please.

Mike Zimmer will likely be available.
