(No Longer) Joe Woods’ Defense

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So I guess Joe Woods gives the defense two play calls and the players are suppose to read the offense to decide which one to go with. It why they aren't on the same page alot of the times. Joe Woods admitted it in his press conference.

They start taking about it around the 5 minute mark in this video.

That isn't anything novel. Most good NFL defenses will do this, especially when it comes to coverages.

A lot of the time your front will have one call that doesn't change, and your coverage might have two calls that change depending on the offensive look.

Moving away from this and adapting to our defensive woes is good. That's something i like seeing. I'd be more worried if Woods was stubborn and stuck with what wasn't working.

When can they try a break and potentially break defense?

I thought the fixes came after the first loss?

Now I’m hearing it’s after the second loss?

How many more games does Woods have to piss away before actually implementing changes?

This is fucking stupid. Never should have been here in the first place and here we are with 2 losses for no goddamn reason.

Yeah, agree.

I ~want~ it to work out and go well. I mean I'm glad that he's making changes (at least from what we heard) but it really makes you wonder about everything leading up to the season. Did we have to lose games to realize it wasn't working? Did these communication issues exist during training camp and we just ignored them?

Lots of questions. Plenty of fans (myself included) were excusing Mayfield due to scenarios like the injury and new offenses he had in his time here. However, the same collection of poor work that caught up to Mayfield will have to be done for Woods too if we don't see changes. And personally I won't be thrilled with just a late year "surge" of good defensive play. "Wow the defense was good the last 6 games - next year maybe we can be top 10!"

Woods has been saying the right things for over a calendar year now.

There’s nothing he can say regarding schemes, implementations, etc. that matters for me. I need to see the success transpire on the field.

Nice to see this fucking piece of shit is still employed!

It's so much easier to say a coach is irredeemable than to admit a player is.

Grant Delpit has been terrible, yet people come in here bitching about Joe Woods.

Look, if you think that the only problem with Delpit is coaching, then you should be calling out the DB's coach first--but how many of you even know who Jeff Howard is?

I think the problem is between Delpit's ears, and I don't think a coaching change will fix it.

I don't see an easy fix. I think we have to deal with these shitty, gut-wrenching lumps for the rest of the year and hope Delpit starts to figure out how to play football at this level.

Oh I agree, Delpit is a garbage can. Dude will be out of the NFL in 3 years.

Drafting him over Winfield will haunt us for a decade.

Woods is trash as well, though.

The optimist in me reminds myself that Delpit missed his entire rookie year due to injury. He's still a young, inexperienced player and these mental lapses should improve as he gains experience.

The pessimist in me says that these guys have been playing football since they were in middle school and if their brain hasn't developed to the point where they see these things by now, they never will.

The pessimist in me is winning the battle over Delpit.

Fuck Joe Woods.
