Nobody Beats The Wiz Khalifa Diop

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm still recovering over the Agbaji pick, and not moving up for a Terry, Roddy, or especially TyTy (how did he fall so far!?!)... But, I don't hate this pick -- even though I know very little about Khalifa Diop.

I trust the Cavs intel to believe Diop may not have been available at 49. After all, DraftExpress had him ranked as their #32 overall prospect.

We all want wings and instant gratification. But having a big, athletic center developing overseas isn't necessarily the worst thing. It gives us some potential flexibility if a home run Allen trade opens up down the line, or if not, it allows us to just ignore finding a backup center in free agency in a couple of years when Diop is ready to come over.

Don't love it, don't hate it. I personally would have preferred taking Kendall Brown, but I also don't do this for a living.
The same as the bolded. Kendall Brown would not have only been great off the bench with Sexton/Love but might work his way into the starting lineup.

Don’t get too excited as he’s unlikely to ever put on a Cavaliers uniform.

Signed,

Ejike Ugboaja & Milan Macvan
I doubt they spent 39 on a guy they'll never bring over. Macvan was #54 and Ugboaja was #55. Neither were drafted by Altman. It is not odd to spend a late 2nd on a guy unlikely to ever come over because those rights can be used in trades later. Take getting pick 49 from the Kings. You can't just send cash for the pick but player rights can be coupled with cash even if those player rights will never be used. Venzenkov was pick #57 for the Nets and likely drafted for the explicit purpose of being used for trades exactly like the one the Cavs did to get a draft pick.

Travers is far more likely to be that guy - though his skillset actually makes it so he might not be. He is a developed shot away from having Joe Ingles upside (Ingles was undrafted).

I seriously doubt they spent pick 39 on someone they never intend to bring over. A pick in the 50s? Sure.

Didn't he played in Spain? Probably Jose Calderon's contacts gave them some info on him

I never quite get the point of drafting guys you never intend to bring over.
I don’t think that’s always the case. Sometimes a player isn’t worth trying to bring over.

Seems like he could be an understudy for Allen I guess. Hard to see the Cavs offering him more than min salary right now if he wants to come over in 2022.

Seems more like they are going to stash him for a while.

They could do a two-way, though they are limited with Mobley on one. However they likely would be more willing to do a two-way for a draftee over Moses or Goodwin.

There may be space at the back of the roster to send someone to the Charge too. But I doubt all three second rounders will come over this year. Diop might. I suspect Travers is more likely to stay in the NBL one more year, though you never know.

I do think there is some flex on the roster between Osman, LeVert, Windler. So there may be space at #15, though usually you try to only keep 14 plus the two ways.

Fedor already said Diop is being stashed overseas. As is Travers. I'm guessing it will be at least a year before either come over. Travers may never come over.

It makes sense - I was just responding to a post saying what to do if he wanted to come over in 2022. Just stating where the space would be in that case. I doubt he comes over this year.

Oh. Yeah if he wants to come over it would weird since we already have Mobley on a 2 way deal and using both two way spots on bigs isn't ideal. But they could make it work. And I would rather have Diop on a 2 way deal then Nembhard.

I agree. If we brought someone else over I'd be more interested in Travers because of his position instead of doing two contracts on PF/C. Having the second two-way be a wing makes more sense. Travers seemed to indicate he'd be at Summer League and I suspect Diop will be too.

If Travers is interested in coming over, I'd probably set it up with the goal to give him and Mobley tons of time with the Charge and hope that Mobley can be converted to a standard contract by end of the year. If he can be in the rotation for the 23/24 season then Diop has an opening for next year to come over. Travers sounded interested in coming over in the interview I saw, though will be longer for him to get here due to coming from Australia. Perth is a long trip (done it before).

Travers also makes more sense to work with him on shooting. If your goal is to try develop him into a Joe Ingles type (quite possible) then can you do that in the NBL or do you need him here? Can they send a coach Down Under to help him develop?

Just have get him on the same team as Delly and have Delly mentor him.

Too busy playing Space Invaders, scalping Cheap Trick tickets, and dropping quaaludes next fall.
