Nobody Beats The Wiz Khalifa Diop

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm kind of shocked. Pretty much everyone who commented on this pick last night said he had no offensive game, he would be at best an energy big/defensive blocker/rim runner. Not one mentioned that he has great shooting form on free throws, fade away shots, and from behind the arc. He can pass and dribble too.

It's almost like the majority were pulling their comments right out of their asses having never watched any film at all. But I know nobody would ever do that, right?

I saw a lot of folks begging for Kendall Brown, and I personally didn't watch him play a second of ball. However, nobody took him until pick 48. For a hyped kid who was a 5 star recruit, that's unusual. Suggests to me there may be a few chinks in that armor.
He’s a very good athlete with size and skill. His numbers at Baylor were solid and I haven’t heard anything about him being a problem. It seems odd how far he fell.

Youtube highlight videos don't count as "film".

Anyway… I don't really have a strong opinion on Diop at this point. He doesn't seem awful but apparently has stone hands and is another non-shooting big, AND Moses Brown already exists, so…

My rational around this pick is based on the fact we had to play Moses this year. If he can be better than him by next season that a win

Moses was actually better than I expected. He is an inch taller, 5 lbs heavier and 2 years older.. played a lot of minutes in the NBA.

He hasn't stuck anywhere, and I am thinking that is because hus defensive numbers are not great. He has moves inside, and cleans the glass well. Elite rebounder.. no range though, and does not play through contact.

Diop has the same high motor, but seems to be built thicker, and barrels through contact..

Cavs have never succeeded at the draft and stash. I don't think we have been good at developing guys that are not in our house. But looking down the road a couple of years if Diop can fill out a bit, and still retain his mobility, he could become useful..

This guy has not missed a shot in the highlight videos I’ve seen.
He's actually blocked every shot that anyone has taken against him too. I need to check, his teams must have won every game, right?

Moses Brown is a nice stopgap but he has no ability to switch onto quicker players. According to the Cavs braintrust Diop has quick enough feet to be more switchable on defense. Take that for whatever it's worth.

My point was, based on people's initial commentary about this guy, I was expecting someone with an offensive skillset similar to guys like Mutombo or Desagana Diop. In other words, no offensive skillset at all beyond put-backs and lobs. Even if it's only a highlight, he shows some ball handling, passing and shooting skills against live competition. He's got some smoothness, fluidity of movement, and shooting form that surpasses the initial descriptions.

We won't know for a few years if he ever becomes anything worthwhile. He's not starting out with an empty toolbox though. My assumption is that Altman sees this guy as next year's #1 draft pick for when we don't have one.

I saw some people mentioning his jump shot earlier.. where can we find that vid? I’ve seen him take one baseline jumper in the videos I’ve watched and it was flatter than what planet Earth is in Kyrie’s mind

Dunno which video you saw, but here's USA v. Senegal from last summer. There's a series of shots from him starting at 1:30.or so.

Scroll up to JJ's post and there's 2 clips. It's a minute sample size but even that shows that the kid has some skills. Good free throw form, good form on his jumper, good arc, very fluid shooting motion. He has a fade away in some other clips as well.

Shooting motion has some good bones to it, needs some work, but for a young raw prospect, he has a lot to like.

But regarding free throws, he’s a mid-50’s guy. He’s not 70% from the line, just want to point that out.

This shows the kid knows what it feels like to be on the short end of a 30 point ass-whupping.
