On The Clock: 2020 RCF NFL Mock Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
After a collective Oh shit! was heard from the entire state of Wisconsin, a camera has located the Packers QB.
Aaron Rodgers is currently on his knees & praying "Come on Lions, screw this one up too.

We have a trade!

The Washington Football Club (Yep, we changed our name since I took over as well) have traded the second overall pick in the 2020 draft to the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Washington Football Club, in return, will receive the following:
  1. The sixth overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft
  2. The 71st overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft
  3. The Los Angeles Chargers' 2021 First Round Pick
  4. The Los Angeles Chargers' 2022 Second Round Pick
While Washington FC loves Chase Young, we might currently have the worst roster in the entire NFL outside of Miami. One player isn't going to fix our team, so we came into this draft with the goal of keeping our #2 overall selection in the top 10 of this draft, but also adding as many additional future top-3 round picks as possible. This draft capital was too good to pass up.

@Triplethreat you're now on the clock (Someone page Tua to hurry up in the bathroom and get back on the Zoom meeting).

Yeah there was no chance I was coming anywhere close to giving up that much, so good on you for making a smart deal.

With the 3rd Pick in the 2020 RCF NFL Mock Draft, the Detroit Lions select...

Chase Young, DE, THE Ohio State University

Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd be able to make this selection at third overall. God bless the teams that desperately needed QBs in front of me.

Overview
Elite size, length and athleticism created loads of production and a vaulted pro projection, but Young's set of disruptive properties have yet to be fully weaponized. He's fairly basic as a pass rusher, with just a couple of go-to moves and an occasional inside counter, and yet he still managed 16.5 sacks in 2019. He has the traits to overwhelm many of the tackles he faces, and it won't take long for teams to add a bull-rush, a rip-and-run and a stab counter into his repertoire. He plays a little upright at the point of attack, and his ball awareness is below average, but those concerns aren't enough to counterbalance his range and agility as a run defender. Young possesses superior traits and the ability to wreck and alter offensive game-plans as a perennial All-Pro.

Strengths
  • Rare physical specimen with long, chiseled, pliable frame
  • Staggering leaps in high-impact production over consecutive seasons
  • Loose, fluid, agile, aggressive and explosive
  • Rush pace quickened substantially from 2018
  • Quick-twitch eruption out of his stance with first step
  • Provides early response to dislodge and clear the punch
  • Momentum/balance gives his rush extended life
  • Turns torso and flips hips to climb around tackles
  • Consistently targets QB's throwing arm when attacking the pocket
  • Power and size to play through blocker's edge
  • Operates with quick hands and rarely allows them to linger
  • Speed and length create expansive play-making radius
  • Low success rate for teams trying to run around him
  • Once he sinks his hooks in, it's over for the ball-carrier
  • Long, lateral slide for sudden step-around as edge defender
  • Heat-seeking missile with exceptional change-of-direction talent
Weaknesses
  • Field awareness and anticipation is below average
  • Loses track of the football at the mesh point
  • Gives some ground when setting the edge
  • Could use better anchor drop in his lower half
  • Rush plan heavily reliant upon athletic ability and traits
  • Initial hands lack purpose and skill in pass rush
  • Not very instinctive as a pass rusher
  • Needs to create more half-man entry points as a rusher
  • Telegraphs inside slide step counter
  • Will need better go-to moves to become less predictable as a pro

@SuperSurge and the New York Football Giants are on the clock.
@Jack Brickman and the Miami Dolphins are on deck.
@Out of the Rafters at the Q and the Washington Redskins are in the hole.

If Surge gets this in before midnight I should have time to pick before bed.

Round 1 (No. 4 overall): The New York Giants select Tristan Wirfs, OT Iowa

Wirfs.jpg

Looked HARD at tOSU Jeff Okudah and Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons, Iowa offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs is the pick here.

The Giants addressed their need at middle linebacker by acquiring Blake Martinez, who’ll now play alongside second-year man Ryan Connelly. That leaves the offensive tackle position as New York’s biggest need and Wirfs is arguably the best one in this year’s draft.Wirfs had scouts dropping jaws at the NFL combine when he ran a 4.85 40-yard dash at 6-foot-5, 320 pounds. At Iowa, Wirfs was given first-team All-Big Ten honors and won the Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year Award in 2019.He’s a perfect fit to become the Giants starting right tackle and provide Daniel Jones with the extra layer of protection he needs.

The Giants at #4: Wills they, Wirfs they, or won't they at all. The Browns fans all want to know.

With the 5th pick in the 2020 NFL draft, the Miami Dolphins select...

Isaiah Simmons, LB, Clemson

With the fifth pick in the draft, the Dolphins are taking the most versatile defender in the draft, Isaiah Simmons. Simmons is a LB/S/CB hybrid who will instantly bolster the Miami defense and be able to take snaps at multiple positions. This was a really tough call between Simmons and Okudah. Both are fantastic defensive prospects. Ultimately, it was Simmons' versatility that sold me on him.

Here's his NFL draft profile:

Player Bio
Simmons is an Olathe, Kansas, native who watched his older brother, Victor Jr., suit up for the home-state Jayhawks. While Victor got a shot at an NFL job due to his athleticism, his younger brother has a chance to be a star at the next level. Simmons started down that road as a sophomore, leading the Tigers in tackles in their national championship season (89 total stops, nine for loss, one interception returned for a touchdown, seven pass breakups, three forced fumbles). He started 14 of 15 games at linebacker just one year after playing in 14 games as a backup safety (45 tackles, three for loss, one sack). His play during the Tigers' national title season got him on the national radar, and his play as a junior (102 tackles, 16 for loss, eight sacks, three interceptions, nine pass breakups in 15 starts) earned him the Butkus Award as the nation's top linebacker. He was also a finalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Bronko Nagurski and Lott IMPACT Trophies, as well as a first-team Associated Press All-American, ACC Defensive Player of the Year and first-team all-conference selection. Simmons was all-state on offense and defense as a senior at Olathe High School, as well as the state champ in the long jump his junior and senior years.

Overview
Ascending hybrid talent with rare length, speed and versatility to create mismatches for the offense, depending upon alignment. He has a bachelor's at three positions (slot corner, safety, linebacker) but could earn a master's degree in complex workload with a more focused and defined job description than "jack-of-all-trades." He can handle zone or man coverage from a variety of spots on the field, which gives defensive coordinators a chance to disguise blitz packages and exotic post-snap looks. He'll miss run fits and can be misdirected due to a lack of instincts near the line, but his playmaking range outweighs those concerns for now. His unique potential to spy and shrink the field against dual-threat quarterbacks could push him way up the draft board.

Strengths
  • Rare versatility and matchup potential around the field
  • Allows coordinators freedom in game-planning
  • Explosive run-and-jump athlete
  • Second gear makes sideline-to-sideline range elite
  • When it spills wide, runners have no chance
  • Loose core should allow him to slither around blocks
  • Coil and strike-stopping power as open-field tackler
  • Superior finisher with length and agility for expansive tackle range
  • Unlocks exotic blitz packages and disguised coverages
  • Long speed to check seam-runners and wheel routes
  • Pain to try and throw over from zone
  • Can cover ground and close the gap in coverage
  • Aggressive to slap and dislodge throws
  • Could be antidote for zone-read and spy-needy quarterbacks

Weaknesses
  • Instincts near the line of scrimmage are a work in progress
  • Delayed read and respond as inside linebacker
  • Hasn't figured out angles and timing as downhill linebacker yet
  • Needs to fill out and learn to punch and play off blocks
  • Has issues getting unglued from blocking tight ends
  • Will lose contain duties from time to time
  • Doesn't have early speed burst from transitions in man
  • Confusion with coverage duties against North Carolina
  • Leggy short-area footwork in change of direction

I'll edit this post into a full write-up later this afternoon. A bit busy with work stuff right now. Simmons is a versatile player capable of sliding into multiple positions on the field and thus is a perfect fit for a team in the first year of their rebuild like the Dolphins.

Can someone PM whoever is up next for me?
I'll PM him for you. ;)

With the sixth pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Washington Football Club selects Jeffrey Okudah, CB, Ohio State.

Okudah came into the 2019 college football season as the #1 DB in the country, and didn't let anyone down. He continues a line of strong #1 Corners from Ohio State who excel in press man coverage on the outside. While he may not be as good of a pure coverage prospect as Denzel Ward, or as good of an all-around prospect as Marshon Lattimore due to some missed tackles, I have him right in the same balllpark as those guys.

We are shocked that Okudah has dropped to this selection, and we are happy to take the #1 defensive back, and #2 defensive player in this draft. Okudah is a guy who can come in and play press man coverage against #1 NFL WR's on day one. That ability is absolutely special in today's NFL and might be more coveted than pass rush in some organizations' eyes.

With Washington's abysmal secondary, Okudah can step in and start immediately. He'll fill the #1 CB role with us for a long time.

The Carolina Panthers and @smalls1129 are on the clock. The Arizona Cardinals and @Tonedef75 are up after them.
