OSU Recruiting Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This sounds like something that’s going to happen.

Best guess after reading the various articles tonight:

Fields in
Martell out post spring (graduate transfer)
Dwan Mathis out (possibly to Georgia)
If it plays out that way, they better hope that Fields is granted the waiver to play immediately and that he stays healthy the whole year. Not sure how great I'd feel with a QB room whose only three scholarship players are Fields, Matthew Baldwin (yes, I know the staff is very high on him) and Chris Chugunov. Although, I'd still take the risk since Fields is so goddamn good :chuckle:

Martell is going to graduate after 2 years?
Keep in mind that, on top of his normal academic load for both the '17-'18 and '18-'19 school years, he enrolled in January of '17 and would have taken summer classes in both '17 and '18. Whether that will be enough credits to graduate by the spring, I don't know.

Bascally the same thing if they roll with Martell and Baldwin this year.

Sounds like they may keep Mathis, could go either way.

He’s supposed to sign at 9

Looks like Mathis is gone.

Really hope Fields can play immediately.

Ouch....loss of Mathis is a tough blow. Some rumors it's due to Fields but not sure that holds a lot of water. Mathis will take a few years to develop anyways. You'd think he'd be amped to play under Day with what he's done with Haskins.

Leaves us with very little depth at QB next year (Martell and Baldwin, and then basically the walk-on from WVU).

I hope this was somehow "mutual" and Fields is in, but I don't think Fields is that close to making a decision.....and he's got a lot of very good options to pick from, including OU once Murray moves on after season.

Fields can absolutely play immediately.

He could potentially be a Heisman candidate under Ryan Day. He's got elite speed for the position, he's got an arm similar to Haskins.

The major development points are being able to read the field and being a bit too quick to pull it down and run.

If we get Fields, it's a wash. Even if Martell leaves, Day likes Baldwin. Then you have Miller in 2020. But hopefully Fields is granted immediate eligibility.

Would feel a lot better if fields actually transfers here. Hopefully Harrison also signs today.

I just think it's a huge risk with Dwan. Ohio State told him there were complications with his academics, and he'd be unable to enroll early. Which to be frank, seems ludicrous. Dwan was committed to signing today. And he had no trouble at UGA....

Reading the tea-leaves, it seems OSU wants to push their chips into the table on Fields, and were hoping to keep Dwan as a "plan B" in my opinion. If they missed on Fields, they would've smoothed everything over with Dwan between now and the next signing period. They couldn't convince Dwan to go that route, and I don't blame Dwan one bit. Good luck at Gawja.

They have Jack Miller committed for 2020, so not having Mathis really doesn't seem significant.

Certainly if they'll either:

1. Add a grad transfer
2. Add a second QB for 2020 or a late add for 2019

He made his choice, or Ohio State made theirs. The impact on 2019 itself is non-existent. Even if they roll with Martell or Fields along with Baldwin, they're fine.

If you burn through both, you're fucked anyway.

Of course this is going to sound like sour grapes, but I never viewed Mathis as a potential starter at OSU anyway. Seemed like they wanted a body in the QB room and that's who they liked best. Short of Spencer Rattler (5 star OU commit) and Bo Nix (high 4 star Auburn commit), it was a weak crop of QBs nationally. Find a developmental guy to pair with Miller in 2020 and move along.

I meant be eligible to play immediately.

Someone tell me if I messed something up:

If we get fields (or tate):

Fields starter as a soph in 19
Baldwin Redshirt Frosh

Fields starters as a jr in 20
Baldwin Redshirt Soph

Fields either leaves after jr year or starts as a senior in 21
Baldwin either starts as a Redshirt Jr or is backup
Miller freshman

Baldwin starts as a redshirt senior in 22
Miller redshirt frosh

Miller starts as a redshirt sophomore in 23?
