Pre Season Game #2 (10/7/10) - Washington Wizards @ Cleveland Cavaliers

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
GUYS.. I'M STARTING TO THINK THAT IF WE CAN PLAY AGAINST D-LEAGUERS EVERYDAY WE MIGHT WIN 50 GAMES!

Went to the game tonight, left at the end of the 3rd. My impressions:

-For those who want to contend, better fucking hope that 2 of Mo, Andy, and Jamison stay healthy or stay on the team. The team I saw on the court tonight looked like it would struggle to win 20 games.

-Hickson was pretty decent tonight. Just like the rest of the Cavs, he couldn't hit a shot, but he did play with good energy and body control. Someone needs to teach him footwork though, dude is the traveling machine.

-Sessions was okay. He has no shot whatsoever, but he is a playmaker when he gets into the lane. He also is a decent finisher and a good defender.

-Anthony Parker sucks. In fact, he really sucks. Cannot pass, cannot shoot, cannot move well, cannot defend.

-Ryan Hollins is a really good defensive player. He has total stone hands and is really awkward on offense, though. If it's not a dunk, it'll be a miss, more likely than not.

-Boobie had a solid game. He still has limited passing ability but his scoring ability is still there. He gets more and more comfortable driving the lane each and every year, and looks like he is ready to improve on that again.

-People wishing on a star for Danny Green to be an NBA player better start eternally prayer for Danny. He seems like a good, funny guy, but he has no business playing for an NBA team. Cannot dribble, shoot, move, jump...he's pretty much just there. His only value is he brings fouls and average defense.

-Jawad Williams thinks he is MJ. He's, at best, a backup. His driving ability sucks, he's a below average shooter and his finishing ability is laughable.

-While we are on the subject, we need a vast upgrade at SF. Moon is our best player and he is a bench player.

-Leon Powe looked really good tonight. He has a knack for getting open down low and scoring garbage points. He also put a nifty little move on Yi.

-Samardo Samuels blows. Worse than Hollins, don't see any future there.

-Eyenga has perfect form on his shot but has no idea where to release it. In warm ups, he strokes it with ease on a spot up. Also, he's so fast, he outruns the fast break. By the time the PG makes it to half court, Eyenga is already under the basket. He is the fastest player I have ever seen.

If I forgot anyone, then they are of no consequence to the Cavaliers and it doesn't really matter anyway. Quite a few fans there tonight, maybe 10K which is pretty solid for a pre-season game.

This shows me that we will be just fin in the attendance category this season. Like I said, going to be rocking again. ;)

Pretty much agree with what Amherst said and want to reitarate just how terrible Anthony Parker is. I forgot how much I hated him.

Also, for a team that was supposed to more of a running team we sure didnt show it tonight. We were pretty casual with bringing the ball up the court which led to a lot of isolation and late in the shot clock clanks.

Sessions stat line ended up alright at the end of the game, but most of his buckets came really late in garbage time. He couldnt hit a thing for the first 3 1/2 quarters. Hopefully it was just rust.

It will be a tough team to watch this year IMO. We have a lot of garbage style players and not a lot of flashy excitement.

There were some bright spots, like Hickson's activity and the Kid Congo dunk. Of course as always I will love them to death, but tonight was pretty dreadful on the wholte.

Props again to chiefwahoo for the hook up for tickets tonight. Some nice seats you got there.

If we deal Jamison and Mo and basically go with the all out youth movement then I will be watching a whole lot of college basketball. Either way I will always love my Cavaliers and don't forget that we have a lot of good trade assets that we could use to bring in a couple really nice young players to bring some excitement to the Q.

If we trade Jamison and Mo, we will be the worst team in the NBA, mark my words.

The garbage I saw on the court tonight spoke for itself.

That's pretty much the same with every team though. Take Lebron and Wade off the Heat and they win 2 games even with Bosh.

Take any teams top two players away and they aren't winning shit. We just lost our starting small forward and both our centers, of course if you take the two other top players that are actually left we would only win 12. I'd like to compete, but if it's clear we're not before the deadline, we better ship em out for some sort of assets and start building.

My report from the game.

Some of the above posters need to relax a bit. We have to remember that we were missing our three best players. We are installing a new offense. We have new guys. And we have had a whopping 2 weeks of practice time. We played a lot of guys a lot of minutes that won't even be in our rotations---the Wizards gave most of their minutes to the guys who will be in the rotation for them--Wall played 37 minutes I think...Yi played very well for them as well...the Wiz may be a borderline playoff team this year.

The positives:
* Our defense was very good again with certain lineups---all of them having Hollins in. He is a very good P&R defender. With Gibson on Wall and Hollins in the paint, Wall struggled to really do much (he was scoreless in the first half).
* Gibson played good defense--hit a few shots--he will be very good for us this year..but he will be playing off the ball when Mo and Sessions are in--which will allow him to concentrate on what he is good at. Some might look at his assist numbers and assume he can't do much for his teammates--but in fairness to him our bigs are not catching the ball---put Andy in and he catches the passes and finishes.
* Eyenga was pretty impressive---I think he is already better than Green. The Cavs really need to carve out 10 minutes a night for him to learn on the fly this year. His athleticism is amazing. He blocked 2 shots and altered at least one more.
* Hollins had 14 boards. A knock on him was he was a bad rebounder for his size/position...but in the two games so far he has attacked the boards. He also is a defensive presence...his offense still needs work--and lots of it....but for a backup center getting 15 to 20 minutes a night, I think he will do fantastic this year.
* Hickson is aggressive and getting to the line---he is rushing a bit though on his jumper.
* Powe looked good, even knocked down a few jumpers
* Sessions got 10 boards...I think he is our starting two guard---he can initiate on offense, while Mo knocks down the shots.
* Moon played well again, he should be our starting SF

Negatives
Turnovers---we turned it over a ton...some were sloppy, some were forced by the Wizards trapping at half court....the guys are just not used to the offense yet...and they are not used to running on rebounds..you can see them pause and then think "oh yeah, mike brown isn't here".
Green- At this point I don't know if he makes the team. He is no better than he was last year. His shot is awful, he turned the ball over a lot. I would play Eyenga above him at this point
Parker- had an off game shooting the ball---I am thinking we start Mo-Sessions in the back court this year.

All in all, it is still just pre-season and certain lineups we played will never be seen again. The Lakers lost to FC Barcenlona last night..and they TRIED to win that game, Odom played 41 min, Gasol 37 min, Kobe even played 25 min. I am encouraged by what I see we can be when healthy. We will be able to score...and our defense should be very very good.

My projected rotations
AV-Hollins
JJ-Jamison-Powe
Moon-Jamison-Eyenga
Sessions-Gibson-Eyenga
Mo-Sessions

I went to the game last night and didn't think it was quite as bad as others are saying. It shouldn't be overlooked that we played without 4 potential starters (Mo, Graham, Jamison, Andy) including our 3 best players. Our 9 day old offense had some troubles, but our first half defense was outstanding and we did have the lead with 7 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

edit: I see AvonCavsFan went into some more detail than I did.

Eyenga with 3 assists in 15 minutes? Gibson gets the start and dished out only 1 in 24 minutes?

Hmm ...

look, none of you have mentioned either that this team last night was GASSED! they practiced for two hours on GAME DAY! what goes when yr tired? yr shot! that's why they shot so horribly. to be making judgments off of either of these games, like some of you seem to be doing, is nuts! though i will say danny green should lose minutes to eyenga for sure...

Yeah I am actually excited by Scott's method of wearing them out and then teaching basketball. That way when they are tired in the game they will still make good decisions. I have no idea how long until we see what we are really going to get. Especially if any of the young guys get significantly better this year, it could be the end of the year before we see the real product.

Did you watch the game?
