Trade could help convince All-Star to stay with Cavs

CLEVELAND - When you hear the name Martynas Andriuskevicius, think Zydrunas Ilgauskas.
That's a mouthful, but it was the thoughtful Cavaliers who made a wide-ranging deal for both Tuesday.
In acquiring the 7-foot-2 Andriuskevicius in a draft-night trade with the Orlando Magic, the Cavaliers got a 19-year-old prospect to be sure. But they also sent an enormous goodwill gesture that might be the foundation for getting their All-Star of the moment, Ilgauskas, re-signed in the coming weeks.
Ilgauskas and Andriuskevicius don't know each other, but they are from the same town in Lithuania and share more than just a language and heritage. They also have the same agent, Herb Rudoy. Now, everyone might have a better understanding, too.
At the end of the regular season, Ilgauskas was angered by the new Cavaliers ownership's treatment of his contract situation. The two sides exchanged numbers, they were way apart, and there was little talk. For the past two months, Ilgauskas was seriously believing that he might be playing elsewhere next season.
Now, things appear to have changed again. The hiring of Danny Ferry, one of Ilgauskas' best friends, as general manager was a great start.
Tuesday, as Andriuskevicius was sliding down the draft board and into the second round, the Cavaliers reached a deal with the Magic. The Magic drafted Andriuskevicius with the 44th pick for the Cavaliers. Soon, the Cavaliers likely will make him a handsome contract offer that includes several years guaranteed.
Ferry, Ilgauskas, and Andriuskevicius all had dinner Wednesday. They ate high-priced steaks while talking about high-priced stakes.
Only a few teams can afford and want Ilgauskas, and none of them made the playoffs last season. Ilgauskas has said repeatedly he wants to come back to the Cavaliers. The two sides are apart on money and years, but the gap that seemed quite wide just a few days ago appears to have lessened.
