Then why bring in RG3? To teach how many steps not to take on a 5 step drop? The day you draft a QB is the day you piss RG3 off.
Huh? Why sign anybody then?
Do you know Griffin personally? I don't either, but I would say that from an outsider's perspective, he seemed to have handled his unceremonious and embarrassing demotion and public fall from grace in Washington about as silently and gracefully as one can.
I don't understand how becoming a villain works in professional sports sometimes. Some of these guys are utterly atrocious human beings just based solely upon criminal and/or violent histories. Some of them are complete idiots, either in general brain functioning or in terms of squandering opportunities and letting down their teams and fans through drug use and abuse. And then you have guys like Griffin, whose public image has largely devolved into "well, he's a prick..." or douche... or take your pick of terms simply signifying that people don't like him.
Griffin by all accounts prior to his fall is exceptionally smart and was well-liked. Whatever the combination of injury, defenses catching on, inability to adapt, team composition (including a capable fellow QB being drafted in the fourth round his same year), and coaching decisions led to the former OROTY becoming an afterthought 3rd stringer to bottom-of-the-barrel FA QB signing, I haven't seen any reports indicating that he handled it in any way but the best one might be expected to handle it.
Might piss him off? Come on. Does anything about this situation seem to indicate that he's being "handed the keys" to anything? Does it seem like that's the message that's being communicated from the Browns to him?
I am extremely skeptical about every single Browns decision until I see their decisions FINALLY look like the right ones even in hindsight. But this is not one that I'd be particularly worried about. When you look at the money, the years, the stats, and everything BUT the name "Robert Griffin III," seems like an awesome idea for a team that's been looking for a QB for over 15 years.
I think they'll draft Goff or Wentz if they like them. I think they'll draft somebody else if they like him better. I don't expect that RGIII will factor into that decision any more than McCown would.
When you're a rock-bottom team with the only predictions being pain and the longest tenured complete void at QB in the league, you are afforded opportunities that other teams might shy away from, since we have nothing to lose. Every single option for finding a QB should be explored, every opportunity should taken, rather than selecting one amongst several. RGIII is just another option [at] QB.
