Ricky Rubio - Take the Money and Limp

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I dont know if he wants to be in Cleveland to be honest. Re-signing him might be an issue, but if we do re-sign him, what would that contract look like...MLE is what 11 mill next year? Has to be over that to incentivize him to stay. I just dont see him being a long term piece.

Some of this motivation to keep up his play might be to get to a contender this year so they have his bird rights to resign him long term. I think he might realize the better he plays the more likely he will be to be traded especially if offers are on the table and he tells the front office he doesn't invision himself resigning here.

I wouldn't hesitate to throw a 2 year 30 million dollar contract at him,,other than locking up Sexton and
signing our first rounder (which won't be a huge salary commitment) I don't see them signing anyone of consequence in free agency.
Whether he would sign for that is anybody's guess. Have to let the season play out and see what happens.

With Sexton's new contract bump, pretty sure that 2/$30M sends the Cavaliers back into the Luxury Tax. Is Gilbert willing to go back there without a real contender?

I do think Ricky would like to stop moving onto new teams, but I think he'd rather start on a contender for a few years as he ages than babysitting Garland and Sexton.

I don't think much has changed, I think Rubio is still hoping for a midseason trade to a real contender.
WIndhorst pod just kind of helps entrench that for me.
Barring the Cavs punching way above their weight, I could see someone like Boston offer some value and I could see Rubio wanting to be the guy deciding between Brown or Tatum. 76ers too in maybe a multi team-er that sends Ben west, Rubio to Philly and the Cavs getting some piece that fits.

I don't believe for a second that Rubio will go ring chasing. Sure he'd probably like to play for a contender... but the keyword here is "play". He's not joining a team like that to sit on the bench at age 31.

However, I don't see any real contender starting him either. These teams are pretty well set at PG.

Ricky doesn't have a ton of leverage despite his good play. He's looking for one more big contract, and there aren't many teams prepared to offer him one.

he'd play a ton of minutes in Boston and Philly in the same role he has on Cleveland (where he's coming off the bench).
Final year of his deal, UFA this offseason. Maybe we get a S&T from him, but I don't see his tenure lasting longer than 1 season, and possibly only till the trade deadline.

Think this season is really an extended tryout to see who will be teammates with Mobley and Allen going forward. Cavs have incredible flexibility with so few long term commitments. If it makes sense for the Cavaliers to keep Rubio and we can agree on a deal then it will happen but it’s way too early to tell.

For me at least the 95% confidence range for dispersion of predicted wins has widened on the high side. We already have two Western Conference Road wins. In one of LeBron‘s final two seasons we only had two road WC wins all season out of fifteen and they were the four weakest teams. Not saying we’re at that level yet but if we win one of the next three games that’s a winning West road trip which is hugely impressive for such a young team. I know, I know we started out hot last year and it ended badly but I think we have better upside potential this season. If we beat the odds and make the playoffs then Rubio might feel he has a home here mentoring the young guys.

Isn't he a FA at the end of the season? He can go then.

right.. tat's what I'm saying.

I think we had a better chance of winning more games last year too if we hadn't been a MASH unit, maybe 3-4 more W's. This year, with health, maybe 3 more on top of that pace?
Anyway, playoffs probably not likely, but getting in your licks on west coast playoff teams prior to them really getting their sea legs is positive.

I still think Rubio is a 1 season at most player for us.

What about when the Sixers finally trade Simmons? Could we sneak into a Simmons trade as a 3rd team and cash in by sending Rubio to Philly? Without Ben, they'd need a playmaker and I could absolutely see them starting Ricky.

ETA: I'm not suggesting dumping Rubio for scraps. He's valuable enough to our team that I'd only send him out for a FRP or equivalent value at the very least.

He's been the steady backcourt veteran that this team has needed for awhile. Well, at least after Delly had his series of concussions and completely messed up his jump shot by changing his shooting form.

One of my only complaints would be that I wish he didn't trust his jumpshot as much. He's shooting 4 for 29 in the last 3 games, and, as smart as he is, he has taken a few untimely, questionable shots rather than looking for better options. If his feet are completely set, I don't mind him taking an open jumper, but not when he's drifting sideways or fading. His slow set shot is not built for those types of shots. Definitely a shame that he's never developed a reliable jumper during his career.

Maybe I'm being nitpicky. It's been overall awesome to have a veteran player who knows how to run an NBA offense.

I love some Spanish Mamba! What Rubio did tonight was outstanding. Felt like a playoff game tonight. He played in control, composed throughout, he was making everything. 8-9 from downtown including 8 in a row. Loved his passes to Mobley and Allen underneath as well. I knew when Koby got Rubio, it was going to be so great for this team. But having a career night in 37 points was unexpected.

Please extend Rubio.
