Set Free: Dante Exum

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I have mixed emotions on the trade. Yes, I'm glad KPJ and Garland will have more minutes. They are the future of the team. But at some point, you gotta score, and we will miss Clarksons offense off the bench the rest of this. season. The second round picks are so far down the road they are in high school today. Maybe Bronny's age.
Exum is not a long term solution. I just can't wait till we start adding pieces that could be considered building blocks for the future.
Unfortunately, I am not sure any players beyond Love and Tristan will get us a future building block in a trade right now, and I really think you need to keep those two guys for their leadership.

The redundancy of Clarkson with who Collin Sexton is right now has been a roster problem for a season and a half. Both players look for their own scoring opportunity first and foremost, neither thinks about the value of getting the other players into a groove on offense. This role as facilitator makes all the players on the floor more valuable in all phases of the game, but the Cavs never regained a player like that after LeBron left. And, of course, there is the issue of being so undersized on defense and limiting switches. Clarkson has a modest standing reach of 8'2 and was swinging between shooting guard and small forward.

Enter Exum. Although he is a shade under 200 pounds and definitely a guard, his measurables are just a better defensive fit next to an already small group. He has a 6'9.5 wingspan and an 8'7 standing reach. That brings a defensive versatility that Clarkson just can't provide. On offense, Exum has been underwhelming as a scorer and not efficient either. What he does provide is a point guard mentality of running the plays correctly and getting others involved. Of course Dellavedova is the player on the roster who is the most natural creator for others, but his offense and declining physical ability has made him more of a liability than Exum will likely bring onto the court.

So there is simply a good role right now waiting for Exum, if you allow yourself to ignore his awful contract.

I think with Clarkson out of the way, they can also carve out some time each game for Sexton to run the point and be asked to work on getting others involved. Let him command a group of players and not have to worry about sharing the ball handling duties with someone else.

I would like Beilein to push the notion to Sexton that his primary role on the floor during that time is to get others involved. If he fails to do so, Beilein should insert another ball handler into the game and let them be the primary ball handler for the rest of those minutes while Sexton goes back to playing off the ball.

Don’t like the trade. We’re too deep in to be tryna tank. You only come out good if one of those picks hit. Exum is not that good

I think the old mentality for "tanking" was to get bad and stay bad until you win a lottery pick in a good draft, aka the Chris Grant rebuild. I don't believe that is what this new Cavaliers front office wants to do.

They want a lot of young players, sure... but they also want to run a real offensive system and teach younger players to run a real offense. That includes having some pros who know how to play the right way on the floor to assist in that development. Now Clarkson was a veteran... but he isn't the type who assists in the development of other players. He is a one on one scorer. He is now on a team where his role will be more appreciated.

Exum plays more like Penny Hardaway after Penny had that knee injury with the Suns. He will run plays and get others involved, generally be a useful team oriented player... even if his career will be cast into a "what could have been" category.

Koby probably see this as a bigger picture type of trade. Maybe he has no intentions of ever drafting for the Cavs with those two picks. He now has the Bucks 1st pick in 2022 and 4 extra 2nd rounders.

Getting 3 million below the luxury tax is big for future trades, weighing the value of a trade while trying to avoiding the luxury tax was going to be a hurdle at some point this year and he cleared that fear out with Clarkson.

This rebuild reminds me much more of what the Nets did. They take shots on young guys, try to find a diamond in the rough, and teach all of these players to play the right way. The key difference is that we have our draft picks.

Rockets couldn't trade us a 1st? He fits the Rockets way more than Utah,no?

The Rockets can only trade their currently owned firsts on draft night due to the Stephen rule and currently owing their 2021, 2024, and 2026 1sts to other teams

Yeah, figured. Thanks.
Can no longer remember all of that.

Don't you think Clarkson's value would have been greater near the deadline? was he that much of a malcontent? did they want to free minutes pronto?
cause Clarkson's play certainly warrants a late 1st , no?

Maybe. Maybe not. The team could be higher on Exum then the rest of us. We do have Antonio Lang who had been in Utah with Exum. Maybe he plans on stock piling 2nds to move back up into the end of round 1 again.
