Set Free: Dante Exum

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
To sum it up...

"Exum is just 24 years old, so it’s far too early to close the book on someone with his physical tools. The Cavs are well-situated to utilize a version of Exum who plays off-ball in the half court and defends both guard positions, as that meshes well with Collin Sexton and Darius Garland in a potential three-prospect-guard rotation....Exum is a worthy gamble, especially with the comparatively low opportunity cost given their contract structure."

It appears Exum will get consistent minutes in Cleveland, unlike Utah. The emphasis here is on patient player development, which is what he needs, along with staying healthy. Maybe over the next 130 games the Cavs can make something useful out of him.

I think it's smart for Koby to go after bigger guards and wings. As the roster is currently constructed, the plan is probably to center the offense around Garland and Sexton. Having alot of wing like players will help to reduce the flaws of playing smaller guards.

I like taking a flyer on Exum because if he can be the #3 guard in the rotation instead of KPJ, I think KPJ is then in better position being a SG/SF long term instead of just a SG. With KPJ frame and size I think he is better suited to defend SFs and bigger SGs. With KPJ's offensive potential, they shouldn't wear him down defending PGs and quick SGs which I think he would be asked to do if he was going to only play SG. If Exum works out, he allows KPJ, Sexton, and Garland to defend their natural positions and hide Garland or Sexton on a easier player if necessary.

Exum if he works out is another player that push the Cavs rotation closer to what a modern NBA roster should be.

Yes, with both Porter and Exum being able to play the 2 or the 3 it gives Beilein a lot of flexibility to go with a small, quick lineup or a more conventional one.

Watched a little bit of his recent highlights... Doesn't look as athletic as his draft profile says, maybe the injuries took it away (outback Kobe comp) ... Like his penchant to throw the lob ala Delly...

Kobe was a terrible comparison to begin with, he’s not a scorer at all

I'm confident that if there is anything to be drawn out of Exum at this point, Coach B is the guy to find it. Snyder is an excellent coach but I think Exum needed a change of scenery if not just for his own mental wellness.

Snyder is a good coach, but he is very black and white. If he doesn't see anything in Exum, he isn't going to prioritize him at all. He's exacting and Exum doesn't fit with what he wants to do.

From what I saw Utah fans say about the trade Snyder would pull Exum the second he made a mistake. If that's true mixed with being the fifth pick then signing a extension he didn't deserve maybe he put too much pressure on himself. Sometimes when your trying not to make mistakes is when you make the most mistakes. I'm not saying he will play but if he does Coach B will put up with the growing pains and Exum will have zero pressure in CLE other then just developing which of course will only happen if he stays healthy.

Hi I'm Dennis Lindsey of Salt Lake City Shooting Guard Liquidators. We have the cheapest prices in the industry for Alec Burks, Rodney Hood, Dante Exum and Grayson Allen, starting at the low low price of second round picks, right here at Salt Lake City Shooting Guard Liquidators.

You need mediocre shooting guards but don't want to pay full price? You want Shelvin Mack or Thabo Sefolosha at a fraction of retail? Come to Salt Lake City Shooting Guard Liquidators. Right off of Interstate 80, one more time that's Salt Lake City Shooting Guard Liquidators!

Yeah I read that about Snyder too from Jazz fans.

I am optimistic from the point of view that while Garland's body language started the year very bad, Beilein and the coaching staff empowered him and he is trending the right way and is finding his spots. It took awhile, but Beilein has figured out where guys are most effective, so in that respect I trust him with Exum.

With what he has gone through, he needs a change of scenery. I just don't think Exum was ever a lottery talent. I am not sure there is much to be excited about at all. He's not a Rondo level passer, but he is worse than Rondo shooting.

Defenders who can't shoot are almost worthless in the NBA right now. Simmons is getting blasted right now and he is 10x the talent Exum is. If his playmaking was really special I might feel differently, but his game seems to be basic pick and roll reads.

For a worthless player who can't shoot Simmons is hitting 56.7% of his shots, averaging 14.4 ppg, 8.7 assists, and 7.0 rebounds. Not bad for a point guard.

In December he's averaging 16.4 pts, 9.1 assists, and 7.1 rebounds on 62.1% from the field. Of course, the December numbers are skewed by the Cleveland game where he scored 34 on 12-for-14 from the field.

He's averaging 35.5 minutes on a team that's 23-10, so that's not bad for a guy who's "almost worthless". Maybe the Sixers would trade him for Knight or Delly?

Number 1 reserved for former Jazzman guards who disappointed in Utah? First Rodney Hood now Exum. Both drafted in the same draft as well.
Ex Jazz SGs traded to the Cavs tend to have cool names... Rodney Hood, Alec Burks & Dante Exum

I'm going to be optimistic on this guy and hope he works out for us. Looking forward to seeing what he has. It's an opportunity for him to get some minutes. Hope he's not another fragile one though.
