So Long, Jadeveon Clowney

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Crazy to think he still just turned 28.
Wow. Didn’t realize that. I guess with as much as he’s been linked to so many teams over the last several years and how he’s moved around I would have guessed early 30s. Plenty of room to prove it and get another big contract

Will someone ask him what changed from year to year?

One year deal is fine. Good move

If Richardson restructures, why would you not want the depth on the DLine?

I 100% want Richardson. Just saying AB may feel like he’s expendable now since he and Malik are similar players and cheaper.

I wouldn't be quick to cut anyone. We are well aware of what depth issues can do to a defensive unit.

Richardson is going to make 12 million in his final year, we are not 3 or 4 million over the cap. If we dont restructure he is 13.7 mill against cap because of signing bonus, if we cut he save 12 million.

Is he worth 12 mill in a world that clowney got 8 mill? Dalvin Tomlinson got 10.5 for 2 years, (cap friendly with extending the money), Suh got 9 mill, Shelby Harris got 9 million.

All 3 of those are better DT's than Sheldon, who is at 12 mill. He wont get more than 7-8 million on the open market.

Give him a 2 year contract worth 15 mill, pay him 5 mill in bonus, and 5 mill a year, make the 5 mill this year guaranteed, next year if we cut, we can save 5 mill and pay 2.5 or we have a good DT for another year.

Win/Win for both sides.

can’t double both

You can in a 2 tight end set (a 12 grouping), but that reduces the pass options to just 2 WR and a back out of the back field which allows the secondary to double both WR's.

Either way, Clowney and Myles should be a problem.

What is really good about the signing is Clowney is one of the best DE's against the run.

Edit, a 02 grouping keeps the tight ends in to double, but gives 3 WR as targets. Might see some of that this season.

I've always had negative feelings towards Clowney, stemming from his final season at SC, where he didn't appear to have a strong desire to play. Many questioned his desire and it seemed like his eye was on the NFL Draft and not Gamecock football. His pro career has been nice but underwhelming, thus all the different team jerseys in his closet. Berry knows best, though, so I'm hoping he comes in motivated and healthy, while not being terribly optimistic.
