Summer League Game 2 -- Cavs vs. Grizzlies -- Sunday, July 14, 2013, 8:00pm EST

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If you watched the game and think Delladova was not better than Quinn or "did not seperate" himself from Quinn, then I dont trust your analysis on players in-game.

There was no comparison between the two.

The real question is, why in the hell did Higgins warrant such a long look as backup PG and why in the hell did Quinn and Higgins get more minutes than Delladova.

I have to believe the Cavs already have a pretty good idea about Delladova or what they intend to do with him, and are trying to get him to camp with less interest from other teams or a lucrative offer from overseas.

Get out of my head. :chuckles: I was thinking the same thing too. For my sanity I just imagined that the Cavs already knew what they had in Delladova and just gave Higgins some time to maybe show something out there. Still Delladova in sparse and limited minutes showed good defensive instincts and energy (he fights) - not much in the playmaking department because as mentioned, he played in short bursts and at one point he played a bit of SG with Higgins on point.

As to my early observations with Zeller, he started well but faded in the 2nd half. I hope he keeps working, he'd be a nice backup big.

Waiters, I believe still didn't show what he can do consistently. I'm not bashing him but he kinda played out of control specially in the early going. He was very aggressive in getting involved which is good but also caused him to pick up those early fouls. He was finally getting the foul calls (he didn't get last season) from the refs and I hope it translates when the season goes underway.

I think once Dion gets comfortable (which I know he will) we'd see him flourish.

HAHA! Watching the games I love picking up on things like that which cant be picked up entirely on a scorecard. My pops and I dissect baseball and football games the same way.

Anyone who doesnt really watch will have a different take, usually reliant on stat sheets and group think. But Delladova looked pretty solid out there and one would have to assume the coaching staff was playing with his minutes/roles because of that. Both last game and this game Steve Kerr, Reggie and Steve Smith all said that they could see Delladova as a backup guard in this league right now. I bet the Cavs would rather not lose him right now.

Back to Waiters though, I just dont want him to get frustrated and abandon ship on playing off the ball and getting better at catch and shoot on offense and more engaged when the ball is across the floor on defense. He showed more effort on D, though he still relied on some bad habits like reaching.

I wish he was resolved enough to know that he and the organization have a plan for his development and he should just stick with the points of emphasis regardless of the returns on a summerleague stat sheet. Habits can be broken with a change of mentality and repetition.

With him, I can tell you when a streak will start the minute he makes a play that boosts his confidence. Tonight, it was the step back hesitation pull up here on the left quarter court at about 18 feet, where he made the Grizzlies defender look silly before knocking down the shot all net. He trotted back looking a little more springy and he was on the attack from there :chuckles:

Fun to watch when he gets a groove, but would rather he didnt need one in order to be fully engaged and attacking. He came right back down the next time and launched a catch and shoot 3 that missed, was hoping his next catch and shoot would go down and he would keep at moving off the ball instead of coming to the top and demanding the ball like he did for a good part of the rest of the game.

Want to see him start off with Delladova as his PG and see if he can get him some better looks in the half court early that might get Dion going off the ball tomorrow night.

Carrick Felix is going to be a good player for us. He plays with a high motor and energy and Mike's going to have a hard time keeping him off the floor.

I'm really enjoying watching you melt this offseason. Mainly because you were one of my top antagonist over the past few summers after we passed on centers.

Relax and enjoy some more competitive basketball this season.

I see some growth from Cory Higgins. He isn't as bad as I thought he was a year or two ago, and the team looks productive when he is out there with Dion playing point guard. Here's the thing: He is a nice glue guy at shooting guard, but he isn't creating good shots for others. Dellavedova has been starting the offense and getting the ball moving around, which I've only seen Dion do on occasion. The other guards are just knocking down shots a little better. After seeing Dellavedova hit over 40% for years, I have to believe he is going to start hitting open shots. I still see Dellavedova's ceiling as Derrick Fisher, floor a taller Scott Brooks. He's going to be playing for a long time. Higgins might end up being a Mardy Collins.

I agree that it seems Dion is at his best with the ball in his hands, putting pressure on the defense, and distributing (aka, not shooting).

Can Kyrie add that Steph curry-off the ball offense, that allows us to best utilize Dions strengths?

These two need to watch some old school Bad Boy Pistons game tape, and try to emulate the Dumars Isiah backcourt ( whereIsiah often played off the ball)

Having a 2nd guard who can handle the ball is a luxury. Multiple looks, multiple sets, multiple ball handlers. The game is changing more and more each year; with an emphasis on different looks, creating mismatches, etc. Having a 2nd player who can handle the rock is a luxury most teams can't afford, especially if that 2nd ball handler is a willing distributor, which as we've seen with Steph Curry & Jarrett Jack, could be absolutely lethal. With Kyrie, Dion, and Bennett (Jack & Karasev while we're at it), things could be really fun at The Q this season and in the future.

I dont see Delladova ever reaching Fisher's plateau, but Quinn is just silly. I dont think either one has the speed or quickness to start in the NBA, but Delladova at least has the court awareness and enough skills to play back up. That said, I like Dion at point. If it weren't for Kyrie, this would not even be a discussion, as he is clearly the best point guard we have otherwise. I meant it when I said he and Oladipo are essentially the same, except Dion has more NBA experience.

As for Felix, he is playing well enough to make Ellington look like a luxury. Wayne better sign something pretty quick or the Cavs may decide he is redundant. That said, we should be cautious as to what we read into his summer league performance because it favors athletic players in excellent condition over basketball talent.

Another good sign in my book is the defensive success of this team with relatively little time to practice. They held Memphis to a very low FG pct. Will be interesting to see if they can do that for the whole tournament.

Ellington signed with the Mavs 4 or 5 days ago.

Felix has great defensive intensity, is always directing traffic during dead balls and dragging people into the right spot. Mike brown is going to love him more than anyone not named Andy

Pics now? You're trying to hard cupcake. The funny thing is, I never responded to one of your posts prior to this year. So no, I havent been one of your top anythings the prior few summers.

Try harder.

Im done with this keyboard fight now. Back at work today after vacation and no longer have the desire to joust.

The point stands that we originally disagreed on, you havent been watching the games if you think Delladova hasnt separated himself from Chris Quinn. That was lazy analysis just like that lazy spelling above.

Moving on to game 3.

Spell checking the guy typing from the phone? Is that a new internet bad ass level for you? I guess I should inform you the comma after on is incorrect. It should just be a period. Keep on keepin on!

We've seen upperclassmen these last few years who have fallen to the second round come in and not just stick, but play strong contributing roles on playoff teams. Guys like Chandler Parsons and Draymond Green. I think its important that Brown not come into this season with a short rotation from the onset. When he has in the past, I lived through months of him giving guys like David Wesley chances to stick in the rotation.

Playoff teams nowadays are developing the cheapest young talent by playing them more in this new CBA. These second round upperclassmen are like the best bang for your buck. Glad we actually kept one that is stateside past draft night this season.

Carrick might be more important for Dion's development than Dion himself, because the second DW starts slacking on D or shirking effort, Mike Browns sittin his ass down for Felix in a split second. All season long.
