Summer League Game 2 (Cavs vs. PHX) - Weds, July 14, 8:30 pm ET

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So, if you're Chris Grant or Byron Scott, do you play JJ much the rest of summer league?

Is it time to evaluate the other players or to develop chemistry between the guys who may be Cavs longterm?

I like how JJ had a productive game today after the Cavs thought about sitting him out since he played heavy minutes yesterday.

I like how we are running an actual offense. We have a purpose on the offensive end. Multiple screens and unlimited motion will make our offense competitive against defenses this year.

How was Eyenga?

To quote Denny Green, Eyenga is "who we thought he was"

Basically he showed all the positives and negatives we already knew from him.

Positives

+He's a supreme athlete. He easily won two jump balls and had an absolutely ridiculous high flying dunk at one point. He also uses his athleticism pretty well around the basket to get garbage type points.

+He really hustles his ass off. The kid is always flying around out there which you don't normally see from guys with elite athleticism. Those are the guys that usually tend to coast around.

+His body looks bigger from a glance. He looks like he's comfortably added some weight even though he does still appear to be wiry. I think a full year in an NBA weight lifting and conditioning program would be great for him.

Negatives

-He really has no idea what to do with the basketball in an isolation situation. He doesn't appear to have any sort of dribbling ability at the moment. Because he can't do anything off the dribble, it basically makes any opportunities to pass the ball non-existent.

-His jumper is still a work in progress. He badly bricked one early in the game and then missed another that hit nothing but the glass.

-He bites on every pump fake looking for a blocked shot. With his athleticism and willingness to challenge shots at the rim, he's going to get his share of highlight reel blocks, but his over aggressiveness leads to a lot of easy up and under moves and fouls.

Basically to sum it all up, he's extremely raw still. He plays within his limitations and doesn't force things which is a good sign (and something Danny Green is doing a poor job of offensively through two games IMO) and his certainly has the potential to be a good defensive player, but he just doesn't know how to play basketball yet.

He needs major work on his ball handling and shooting and just his general basketball skills. This idea that he could come in and play rotation minutes in the NBA next year in insane. He's not even close to being ready for rotation minutes in my opinion. The raw tools are there, but the skills aren't yet.

That said, I would absolutely bring him over now and get him working with NBA coaches and playing in NBA practices against NBA players.

I think we keep JJ, but tell him to not pad his stats. By letting JJ play you get to see how other players are going to play with one of our key starters potentially.

Just got back from Thomas and Mack (flying back home in a few hrs :() and the game was great. I sat first row behind the hoop the Cavs shot at in 2nd half. Ended up meeting Byron Scott and dapping up JJ Hickson.

Throughout the week I'll post pictures and write a few posts so make sure to check out the blog daily. Lots of good stories to share.

Can someone fill me in on who impressed and did not impress yesterday? I wasn't able to catch the game.

Hickson was playing like a boss last night.....very impressed with his game.....I think if Green keeps his play up he might be ready to start for us

That was a great game to watch..

So far no one outside of the Cavs draftees (Eyenga, Green and Hickson) look like they'll make it to training camp with the Cavs..

The two guys, so far, who might have a chance are Tasmin Mitchell and Pooh Jeter..

Mitchell is a energy guy who's given the Cavs some solid defense and production... He doesn't look like he has anything that he'll be able to contribute to a NBA team right now but I wouldn't be surprised if he got a look..

Jeter has impressed me with his passing and ability to hit shots but his size is going to limit him and there are other players with similar skillsets that have the size that will likely be making NBA teams... He is a talented player but he looks like he's on the brink of the NBA... He has talent but I'm not quite sure if he's talented enough..

The Suns had some impressive players too..

Matt Janning had a real nice game and I was impressed with his stroke and all-around game..

But the guy I liked the most on their team was Scottie Reynolds... I have no clue on how he didn't get drafted but some team is going to get a UDFA steal if they sign him to their roster...

Good stuff, Smooth. I just mentioned those two names to Keys when he asked what I saw outside of the "big three" of Hickson, Eyenga, Green. Jeter has earned a camp invite in my mind and will be battling it out for end of the bench duty on the real team, although I don't think he makes it in the end. His speed is great, pushing the ball off of made baskets right down to the other end of the floor, giving his team an advantage there. And then he has very good passing and distribution skills. I was most impressed with his ability to set up a broken play, calmly calling out to one player for a pick and roll with little time left on the shot clock. He's definitely a "floor general."

On the other hand, Mitchell can put up numbers in a hurry with his fundamentals. The first game he had a nice double double in limited minutes. Upon entering last game he grabbed a board and scored a bucket within the first 20 seconds. But what's most impressive are his fundamentals. He boxes out the right way, driving into defenders first. And then he had a solid play last game where Hickson got a loose ball around the elbow, and Mitchell sealed off his man so Hickson had an easy layup. This is nothing that goes in the stat sheet, but something that's essential to winning basketball. In the end, he's a bit undersized and I don't think he'll make the team, but he should get a camp invite at the very least.

On a side note, I just found myself from yesterday's highlights :chuckles:

Red shirt on the far left. I'll have plenty of good pictures to post later in the week, including the Eyenga flush from that angle.
