During K Step's tenure....

Nick Chubb with 20 or more carries gives the Browns a 7-1 record

Nick Chubb trade request incoming? I did tweet at him that a sizeable portion of the fan base regularly mocks the idea of him getting 20+ touches a game.

Don't blame him. I feel the same way.

Nah. But, 2023 is going to be a make or break season for most people in this organization.

If 2023 flops like the previous two seasons? The front office & coaching staff will both be gone, and the trade requests from Garrett, Chubb, etc will come flying in.

Outside of a significant injury to Watson early on, this team has to make the playoffs this season, at a minimum. I sure hope everyone in the building understands this and does whatever is necessary this offseason to help make it happen.

If someone offered me a 1st and 3rd round pick for Nick Chubb, plus an additional Day 2 pick in 2024, I would take it.
As much as I love that dude, I would consider that a no-brainer.

Big difference in whether we're talking about the 25th pick, or the 8th.

Although I personally wouldn't do it either way. He's a HOF back about to have his first season with what he hope is going to be an elite QB. Also sends a pretty crappy message to the rest of the team, too. "Well, we didn't really plan on competing anyway."

This does not send any such message.

Nor does losing a running back negate the possibility of competing in 2023.

Teams that are elite throwing the football and can establish an average rushing attack are irrefutably more dangerous than the elite rushing teams that tip the scales away from being elite at throwing the football.

But I don't think anyone we would get with those picks is as likely to contribute as meaningfully as would Chubb in 2023. Maybe next season, but unlikely in this one.

He's also an extremely popular player on the team, and regardless of what anyone may claim advanced metrics say, trading him is likely to be perceived negatively by others on the team, including Garrett, etc..

I just think that's a horrible signal to send to the rest of the team right when we're about to begin our first season with our presumed franchise quarterback.

I realize we need a more explosive offense and plan on maximizing Watson's skillset... but I don't want to ~lose~ our effectiveness and ability to run the ball.

If we decide we want to try to completely replicate the Chiefs/Bengals/Bills and never really run the ball then our team will only go as far as Watson outperforming Mahomes, Burrow, Allen, etc... and quite honestly, I'm not sure I have a ton of faith in that. Watson may never be top 5 again but a top 10 Watson with an elite running game could get us where we need to be. I think there's a happy medium we can find where we have an explosive passing offense but also are able to gash a team on the ground... and I think it's easy to forget just how much of a HOF and elite talent Chubb is.

I honestly think the reason we're 4-1 against Burrow's Bengals is because despite how good their defense has been, they can be ran on. This is why they tend to do well against the Bills/Chiefs who can get pretty anemic with the ground game. We have that element in our offense and it causes problems for some defenses. I want to be capable of fully exploiting that advantage depending on who our matchup is. Trading Chubb right now goes against that... and for what? Rookies that may or may not be able to help our team?

I'm not opposed to trading Chubb but I just don't think this is the year to do it.

Trading Chubb and watching him go on to be the bionic man somewhere with a 7 year peak sounds like exactly the type of thing a Browns team would do.

This sounds right. I’m just going to work on convincing myself I wanted it to happen.

“Nick, now that you’ve capped off a historic year by adding a third consecutive Super Bowl MVP to your third rushing title in the same year, what would you like to say to your fans?”

“Man, just Pittsburgh is a great city. Thanks for the support for all these years y’all. See ya in 2036.”

Yeah, it's one year too soon for the "trade Chubb" talks to be even realistic, IMO. Even if some in the fanabase wouldn't mind it from a team building perspective.

That is, of course, assuming he doesn't request a trade (can't imagine he would).
