The Draft is Near - RCF Contract Dynasty League

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Will the rookie draft also be an auction?

No rookie drafts in this league.

Since we only do four year contracts, and since a lot of guys we bid on in the start-up draft will only get one or two year deals (if you win CMC at $60+, you're not slapping four years on him), and plenty of guys who are given bad deals will be cut after one year, there will be a lot of talent in the draft every year, so subsequent drafts will function the same as the first one.

Also, since contracts and dead cap will be deducted from your auction budget, no one will go into year two with a full $200 to spend. In the similar league I'm in, I'll only have about $100 to work with this year in addition to incoming rookies, as I've already got around ten of my twenty roster spots accounted for.

Do we have to immediately lock in a player for the number of years for his contract or does that happen after the draft is done?

I'll have a deadline a few days after the draft. You guys will all post your contracts in this topic and I'll keep a google spreadsheet and provide you all with read access to it that details every owner's contract lengths and dead money.

Also, if you cut a guy in-season and then pick him back up, you don't get his contract back. Once a guy is cut, his contract is voided and you are on the hook for 1/3 of his value for the duration of the deal. If it's a one year deal, obviously this doesn't matter. You can go over the cap in-season via trades, but by the time the next draft rolls around you need to be under $200 in salaries.

Math is tight!

You should consider joining Hurl's guillotine league as well. It's been a lot of fun the past two years.
I'd like to get involved with a guillotine league, but I'm having a tough time keeping up with the other leagues I'm in right now lol...hopefully will have more time next season

Okay, guys. We're all filled up and now we can move on to the next step. I've set up a League Safe account for us. Everyone will submit their payment to League Safe rather than sending it to me directly.

Tagging everyone since this is an important post. I need all of you (outside of SHarlan, who I can just text, and JDailey, who already contacted me on GroupMe) to PM me your email addresses so that I can send you both the League Safe invite and also the GroupMe invite.

Once you get the invite, you'll need to pay $50 into the League Safe account before the draft. League Safe is basically just a bank. They hold our league's money and then, at the end of the season, the winners will be paid out after over half the league votes to accept payouts. As of now, the plan is for the winner to get $400, second place $150, and third place their money back. You can choose to put a portion of your winnings back into the league to pay next year's dues if you like. I did this last year for a league where I came in second place. You can pay for future seasons as well if you like, but since we don't have future draft picks in this league like in a standard dynasty league, it'll never be required.

I'll be setting up the GroupMe today as well. Once we get everyone in there, we can start discussing what site we will use for the league and anything else you guys want to go over before the draft. We can also figure out a day and time that works best for everyone to set the draft.

As I've mentioned before, after the draft, you guys will have a couple of days to a week or so (depending on when we schedule the draft) to determine your contract lengths. Players you win in the auction can be given up to four year contracts at the rate you won them at. Those four years include this year, so a four year deal would be 2021 through the 2024 season. Once a player's contract is concluded, he will reenter the draft pool.

If a player retires while still under contract with their NFL team, goes to jail, or in the event a player were to suddenly pass away, their contract can be voided without penalty. However, if a player is simply not picked up by a team in free agency, you are still on the hook for 1/3 of their contract should you choose to cut them.

One wrinkle I came up with that I'd like to add is that you can choose to absorb any remaining dead money on a player's deal all in one year to get them off the books completely. This should aid rebuilding teams in getting back to contention quicker, as well as giving contending teams a strategic way to get rid of some dead money all at once while they still have a lot of good players under contract. So if you cut a player with three years left on his deal at $8 per year in dead money (so originally a $24 per year contract), you could choose to have $24 deducted from your auction budget next year and you would no longer be on the hook for $8 each of the next two years.

Also, as far as dead cap goes, I will take 1/3 of a player's yearly contract and round up or down depending on if the first decimal spot is over or under .5. Thus, a player on a $4 per year deal would round down to $1 in dead cap if cut, as four divided by three is 1.3. A player making $5 per year would round up to $2, as five divided by three is 1.6.

If you guys have any other questions, post them here.

Oh, and apparently Fleaflicker doesn't support auction drafts, so we'll have to use something else.

Sleeper should be able to accommodate, I believe.

I actually just set up a league on there to toy with the settings. I need to figure out if I can customize auction budgets there. If not, I know Yahoo allows it even though I'm not a fan of their clunky ass interface at all.

Edit: Looks like it does support that.

We've had one team owner who had to drop out and are currently seeking a replacement. Read the original post for full league details. Long story short, $50 buy in dynasty contract league with a mix of new dynasty players and people with a few years of experience.

Draft day and time TBD.
