The Mandalorian

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I re-watched ROTJ a few weeks ago and what a fucking underrated movie. Everyone has a strong opinion on the Ewoks but what a way to wrap the original trilogy. The end sequence with Palpatine, Vader, and Luke not only holds up but put the sequels to such shame. I can't think of a better way to express why the Dark Side is so powerful and attractive and then you have Rey doing some stupid She-Ra type maneuver. Such subtle maneuvers by Vader including bringing Leia into the conflict as a temptation.

ROTJ is only bagged on because ANH and ESB are more or less perfect films. ROTJ is only near perfect.

The rescue of Han Solo is perhaps one of the most perfect set piece acts ever. Followed by the duel on the Death Star II. It is a very strong film.

That episode was fantastic. I'm sure it's being a prisoner to the moment and downright blasphemous to say... but could that have been the best Star Wars action sequence?

On the topic of top-5 prequel characters, I have to put Maul and Ashoka as the top 2 by a wide margin. I'm only counting characters introduced to us in the prequels, so Obi-wan is out, as well as Rex, who technically appears in RotJ.

I'm okay with Dooku being in the top five, but I'm not sure I can even put Qui-Gon in there. Ventress, Cad Bane, Bo-Katan and Padme are all better characters to me.

If your initial list was just counting the movies, then yeah...

Forgot about Cade Bane. And Ventress.

Hondo Ohnaka, and of course, the indefatigable, irresistible, indestructible Melch.

Hondo was in both, but Melch was just Rebels, which I can't consider prequel-era because it happened after them.

I'd also like to just name "The Clones" as a top-5 character, because Filoni did such a good job with each one of them. Even though they're all clones, they had their own identities and character development and you felt attached to them. Rex, Fives, 99... so many of the best characters from a great show were clones.

I would define the Prequel era as anything from 1999 to the release of Episode VII, so the time period before the Battle of Yavin and/or more or less stuff that George Lucas himself had a hand in.

But my definition is loose.

Also, also: This series is exactly what we had hoped what the Sequel trilogy could have been.

The reappearance of a fan favorite being the bad ass we had always imagined he'd be is what everyone who was a kid in the 70s, 80s and 90s had hoped we'd see of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker.

The excellence of The Mandalorian and Clone Wars and Rebels makes one simply rue the existence of JJ Abrams, Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy.

Their screw-ups are monumental. It is almost as if they worked overtime to fuck up Star Wars.
I still have no problem with The Force Awakens. Yeah, I get the 'retread' complaints, but I'd also argue Star Wars needed that at that point, and it was still an excellent opening to a new trilogy that left lots of questions to be answered. Sadly, Rian just had to be different just to be different, then JJ was brought back and he just had to do fan service.

Anyone who didn't like The Last Jedi needs to go find out about Trevorrows duel of fates script for ep9. Really makes sense out of it

Oh I have watched everything about DoF, it is an amazing script, and if directed right, would have been a great ending. It does not fix or make sense of TLJ, IMO.

Maybe it's different for you guys who were into the Clone Wars and all the EU stuff, because that put more distance between ANH and TFA. but for a guy who just saw the movies, the retread aspect of TFA was overpowering. It was stunningly bad for me. It was like I was rewatching the original trilogy, but just recast with worse characters.

Yeah I think all 3 sequels suck and suck hard. I mean you could see the corporate decisions being made.

Abrams re-did Star Trek let's just do the same thing the Star Wars. Same exact concept. If Disney actually gave the stuff to someone who you know liked Star Wars and give some creative freedom so much more could have been done. You had a hand picked star villain ready to go (say Thrawn) and the historical concepts to work with (fall of rome/rise of Constantinople)

Oh yes: i just basically described the Mandalorian

The Clone Wars TV show definitely made me appreciate the prequels more. Not that it makes them good movies, but it fleshed out the characters and motivations for both sides that makes them much easier to watch and somewhat enjoyable.

I don't expect Mandalorian or any upcoming shows to ever truly save the sequels but Filoni and Favreau are doing great things, so I'll keep the faith.

That is the thing, there is immense value in the Prequels and the associated media with Clone Wars.

The films themselves were not great but the ideas, concepts and characters derived therein were great. Had Lucas got his wish to have someone else direct them, like Spielberg or Ridley Scott, the PT could have been great.

As it is, Lucas has always been a good idea man and we see how good those ideas can be in the hands of talented directors.

The Sequel Trilogy had no ideas, nothing new. Abrams and Disney slapped a few lens flares on it, renamed characters and said "Star Wars!"
