The Rise of Skywalker spoilers thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The new movies just should have taken a much different direction. Not a fan of the story they went with.

Despised TFA, didn't think anything could be worse than that... The Last Jedi though, like, I literally felt like Rian Johnson walked up to me and spat in my face. :chuckle:

The movie was basically a fuck you to Star Wars, it's fans, it's tradition, pretty much the whole mythos; Johnson was both overtly and covertly arguing should be left in the past -- that it's now time for something new -- while in the middle of a trilogy making billions off of fan nostalgia.

It's just a shitty thing to do and that's why the movie is so hated.

Yup.

I was a fanatical Star Wars fan. I am old enough to have seen ROTJ in its second original run, saw the 1997 re-release of the OT films twice in the theaters, saw the prequel films, as mediocre as they were, at least thrice in the theaters. Bought the pirated laserdisc to DVD version of the OT back in college well before Lucasfilm released stuff on DVD. Devoted to the Clone Wars (both versions), even saw the film twice in the theater. Love Rebels and have read a lot of the EU. I have a few of the high-end official lightsaber replicas. I have never lost a game of Star Wars Trivial Pursuit.

Didn't like TFA that much but still saw it twice at the IMAX. Love Rogue One to tears.

I fucking despise TLJ with all my being, both as a fan and as a rational human who thinks. It is the first Star Wars film I only saw once and have not bought for home use. Because of it directly I did not see Solo in the theater. It is debatable whether I see Episode IX at all.

Disney has a problem when I, a stupid fanboy, stop seeing films because they've savaged the universe.

And, hey, it's me! The protests over "the SJW" aspect of the film has no purchase with me.

I wanted to love it... Like, @col63onel and I had talked about Rian Johnson being such a welcome change, that he had the chops to get it done...

From the very first scene with Poe and Hux, I just started to feel this sense of dread.. like.. oh no..

The contrast between the last scene of Rogue One to the opening of TLJ is about as big a difference in quality as any two scenes in the entire series.

I remember being so confused in the opening, like "wait am I missing something? What's going on?"

I'll bet you that Disney execs still don't realize that Rogue One is by far the best received film by the Star Wars fanbase and they should be making more of movies like that. I guess it doesn't help that mainstream media (rotten tomatoes reviewers, etc) have it rated below both VII and VIII.

I'd say at this point they're probably shell shocked and turned back to JJ in hopes that he'll create a "safe" episode 9 that doesn't rock the boat too much and keeps sequel potential alive. If that's what they're aiming for, then they won't be getting my money for it.

I rented the Last Jedi from Red Box the other day and finally got around to watching it. They really did kill off any remnants of the original trilogy from the 1970s. Solo is dead from the previous movie. Luke is dead. Of course, Carrie Fisher passed away so I'm not sure if they'll recast Leia or have her killed off someway too.

I was kinda surprised how jaded Luke had become and I'm not the biggest fan of the cocky pilot guy either. It will be interesting to see what path is taken in the next movie. There are several directions that they can go.

My brother took me to the very first showing -noon (no midnight showings back then), on the very first day the original Star Wars came out. Never got into the whole EU thing, but I've always had a special fondness for Star Wars. I even liked (not loved) the Prequels.

I don't think I've ever seen such a lazy, mail-it-in approach to movies as with TFA and TLJ. They are insultingly un-original and just...bad. It's as if they felt they could get away with utter crap simply because they had the rights to call it Star Wars.

I can pinpoint the precise moment they finally lost me for good - when Leia did her flying through space trick. It was so laughably bad that I have to believe that a lot of folks seeing that scene during production thought it was bad as well, but that didn't matter. "Ah, fuck it. It's Star Wars, and nobody will care if that scene looks ridiculous."

Fuck them. I cared.

Yep...

That was when I turned to my wife and told her Star Wars was dead.

Star Wars has been dead for about twenty years now.

I figured you'd say that... but we've got some really great Star Wars lore in the past 20 years (and yes, based on the prequels! :chuckle: ).

But Clone Wars, Rebels, Knights of the Old Republic... the vast majority of the EU really...

Yeah, but most of that is just side projects. With that argument, you could use Rogue One and, to a lesser extent, Solo to show that Star Wars is indeed still alive.

The fact remains we haven't gotten a good actual Star Wars movie in almost forty years.

Rogue One gave me hope...

I saw Solo; I personally wasn't all that thrilled about it.. Thinking back, it just felt rushed and frankly unfinished -- and I think that's largely because it was done by 3 different directors with 70-80% reshoots and some very sloppy (or maybe genius?) editing...

But you could feel how poorly constructed Solo was... I also think Alden Ehrenreich was probably, stylistically a decent choice, but he didn't actually succeed in the part -- and I would've thought someone would have noticed that.

Also Emilia Clarke was ... not the best choice; at all. Also, Clarke, Ridley, and Felicity Jones are very similar in their unassuming looks. Like, not sure who is doing the casting at Lucasfilm but they obviously have a type.

I mean, not to go into a full review of the film, but.. when I saw Solo, it didn't change my mind post-TLJ; I still felt like Star Wars was dead.

Depends on how you define "good." I do include Rogue One, but here's my personal breakdown of "good" as it relates to sci-fi/fantasy films:

Great
1. Empire Strikes Back
2. A New Hope
3. Return of the Jedi (this used to be #2 for me)

Good
4. Rogue One

Average/Okay
5. Revenge of the Sith
6. Solo

Below Average
7. Attack of the Clones

Bad but not awful
9. The Phantom Menace

Disqualified for plagiarism (may not matter to some)
10. The Force Awakens

Abominations
11. The Last Jedi

You do realize Star Wars has always been rediculously campy. You just saw the original movies as such an age it made sense. I bet now if you saw little teddy bears smashing and destroying AT ATs with rocks in a jungle you would say "wow, wtf is this cartoonish crap-- no way this happens"

This is why Im not all fucked up about the Leia floating scene. I find it humorous more than anything.

For the record, I thought that Rogue One was a really good movie, but I was referring only to main series movies, not the spin-offs. By that definition, we haven't had a good one in nearly forty years.

I also wouldn't rate Revenge of the Sith as average/okay. It was every bit as awful and poorly-written as all the others. For some reason, though, people seem to love giving it bonus points for being PG-13 even though it was a shit movie.

I'd probably put Force Awakens in either Average or Below Average, and I'd lump in Last Jedi with the prequels, as all four movies were garbage.

You're being a tad bit harsh on Solo imo. Maybe it was because I came in with such low expectations, but it was a fun and forgettable film for me. I enjoyed it, but I would never go out of my way to watch it again. If you come in expecting a giant star wars film, then yeah it'd be very disappointing. I do agree that it seems like some weird Frankenstein of different tones and ideas jumbled together.

Also, I think Rogue One stands with any SW film that's not Empire.
