Tribe signs Byrd

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I bought my world series tickets as soon as I heard..... I will alert the others.

maybe we will splurge this year and sign scotty elerton. :thumbdown

What exactly do you want the Tribe to do? Oh yea thats right we should overpay Millwood for 5 years and then when his aging body breaks down in year 2 be unable to sign any new FA's just so the fans will be happy 4 months before the season starts. This is a VERY good signing. We paid market price for a guy we had to get and the best part about this deal is its only for 2 years, with the club option for the third. We now will look for a closer and then a new righthanded 1B or RF and then see what else we can add in with the leftover money if there is any. We are a small-market team we need to get used to that, I guess living in Cali has gone to your head.

Terry Pluto brought up some interesting info on Byrd in the Beacon Journal today. He mentioned how Byrd's recent history shows that after he pitches a lot of innings 1 season that the next year he gets hurt or has a big letdown. Byrd pitched over 2000 innings last season so if recent history continues he might not add much next season.

I think I would have istead gone after a couple of other P's at about the same level and salary as Byrd--Matt Morris or Jarrod Washburn. Both are a little younger and do have some record of success.

he pitched over 2000 innings last year narl.

b mac you dont have to call me out like that. giving paul byrd 7 mill a year is a lot of money. he did have a great walk to inning ratio but i would have like to seen something different.

were a small market team because of a cheap owner. if dolan spends more money then we wont be a small market team bro. their wont be any money left over. that was our signing, the big offseason move was to get paul byrd.

maybe he will suprise us but im not counting on it.

well probably see blake out in right, and see him take the first pitch of every at bat right down the middle.

I remember when we let all of the other "big name" free agents go elsewhere last year and got "stuck" with Millwood everyone was whining about that. Now we have a guy who expectation wise we should be able to expect more out of him this year then we could at Millwood at sigining time last year and some people still arent happy. We got exactly what we wanted, a guy for not an incredible amount of money to pitch for 2 to 3 years until are loads of young pitching prospects are ready to come on to the scene. What is so wrong with having a veteren pitcher on the staff? Not all of them have to be under 30, and I for one am glad we have another high class, fundamentally sound, veteren to teach the rest of the staff some tricks that Milly didnt last year.

Im just baffled as to what other pitchers people wanted us to get this year:
Millwood: Wants a huge paycheck for 4 or 5 years (injury prone)
Burnett: Wants a huge paycheck for 4 or 5 years (injury prone)
Kevin Brown: He's 40 and probably not going anywhere.
Clemens: Hes 43 and going to want an even bigger paycheck then the rest.
Loaiza: Got paid the same amount as Byrd only for 3 years and hes surely more mediocre.
Matt Morris: Will get paid around the same as Byrd only he had 40 more points on his ERA then Byrd did last year.
Jamie Moyer: Pass
Kenny Rogers: Well hes 41 and had a decent first half last year but who really wants him on their team, similar overall stats to Byrd.
Washburn: I can understand wanting him, heck I want him to but from what Ive heard hes all but signed with the Angels again, and for more money than Byrd.
Jeff Weaver: Worse stats than Byrd and will want more money, and years.

The only guy on that list I like is Washburn and he will be getting a nice paycheck from the Angels, one we cant afford. I think Byrd fits our team very nicely. We needed a veteren middle of the rotation guy, and we got him. Next step fill that closer role.

7 mill a year is not cheap.

what was the contract for millwood. it was a one year deal, if it didnt work it didnt, if it did it did.

it worked and we almost made the playoffs. dont compare milwoods situation and byrds, because their are no similarities.

as narl said before this guy is also injury prone.

My bad CavinCali, I guess Im used to being on a different Indians message board and people there are a lot more brutal than things are here. At any rate I still dont agree with your assesment. In the mid-90's we did spend money and we had fans, however, we still didnt make tons of money and you cant expect the phenomenon of what happened in the mid-90's with all those prospects blowing up at once to happen every year. Cleveland is a poor city, Cleveland is a smaller city this equals having to win through prospects. I know you think Byrd was the big signing but my gut tells me something is in the works. Maybe Im wrong but, if I am you better believe Ill be cheering for Casey Blake all year long again.

Something close to on this topic, Would you guys rather be like the Marlins and build to win for just one year and then gut your team and suck for the next 6 or 7 or would you rather be competitive for 5 to 6 years in a row. Ive always thought I prefer the second option but seeing the Marlins win two World Series makes me think that I wish we could just get one even if it means a few years of hard times. Thoughts?

We dont know the details of this contract yet. There very well may be incentives and injury clauses just like Millwoods. Would you be pleased if we added Hoffman and Nomar and then filled in holes and were done?

we went over the 100 mill mark, but im not expecting that much. 60 mill isnt going to cut it, hopefully it does. we only had 40 mill this year and we were the second best team in the bigs until the last weak.

i to hope that something is in the works, but if the garko kid is everything people are making him out to be that i dont see why we would want to make another deal.

to anwer your second question, i just want to win a fucking champioship wether that be the browns, cavs or tribe. when we lost in 97 i was a mess and i hated the fact that the marlins sucked the next year, but their is still the banner in their stadium saying 97 series champions. is their anything good of the 98 tribe team. i dont even remember the season. catch my drift.

The good news is all of our Pro teams are heading in the right direction. The bad news is we still are fans of Cleveland teams and if one place cant win a championship its us. It was good chatting with you buddy but its bed time here in Ohio. Oh one more thing are you goign to the Cavs game this week in Sacromento?

unless someone suprises me i wont be going. finals are next week and usually i have my last exams this week. it turns out i have no exams. the tickets were gone the first day unless you wanted to pay 100 plus. :thumbdown

Byrd is not a bad signing. It's definitely keeping our payroll not so high. I'd rather pay a pitcher 7 mil a year, than 10 mil a year.

And, in all honesty: we don't really need a Kevin Millwood. He's a great pitcher. I never will rag him for that. Best ERA in the AL. But he still had a losing record. So, it should be pointed out that he's not the reason why we win games. Not to one bit. We have other problems that we need to solve. Our pitching squad is good enough to get us through the season and postseason. We do need to re-sign Elarton though, he's a good piece of the squad that shouldn't be brushed aside. Sabathia, Westbrook, Lee, Elarton, and Byrd... pretty much just as solid a lineup. Just needs some consistent batting to back them up.

"Bob is an option," Shapiro said on Friday. "We know he wants to pitch next year."

That's what I like to hear. Bring back Wickman for another year. Cabrera will be the next closer.

I really hope we don't sign this Garciaparra fellow. I really don't think he's the answer for our batting woes. I guess we're really looking hard for a right-hander... I hope we look harder. That, my friends, will be the big signing of this offseason, and until we get one, I won't be happy.

This signing hurts us in a couple of ways. If Paul Bryd gets 7 million/ yr... Then think about what Cliff Lee will want when he is on the market when his contract is up. We have a great makeup of young players on this team but Dolan and Shapiro better think about paying them, not 7 million for Bryd... It is has been said on here before that we will not go anywhere in the next couple of years with out opening up the pocket book. Dolan better start are our young guys will be playing for the big market teams and we will settle in mediocre teams for years... A $14 million contract and possible 22 million in way to deep for Paul Byrd unless Dolan is preparing to open his wallet over the next 3 years...
