Week 13: Browns @ Bengals 1p EST

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We'll always have this gem though, put that dude in zone some more Joe

Just watching the game this evening, on the first drive when Watson dove to the 24, they spotted it a yard short and the Browns ended up turning it over on downs. Anyone else think it was a bad spot? I know feet first that they spot it when the slide begins. But, head first that doesn’t apply, correct? It wasn’t challenged and the announcers didn’t say anything so maybe I am wrong. Anyone know the rule?

He gave himself up.

The spot is correct.

Easy way to determine is to ask yourself is this--if a defender hit him, would you want a flag thrown?

If Watson laid out Superman-style diving forward to get the yardage, he's open for a hit and you mark him where he went down.

The way he just crumpled up and went down, you mark him where he gives himself up.

I don't think Deshaun was in that 9%, so why did they even switch lol
Agreed… it was multiple levels of dumb. It should’ve always been a FG, sneak, or Chubb run, but if you’re going to make a stupid low percentage throw to get tricky, you don’t outthink yourself and take out your best QB. I disagree with the notion that leaving Watson in would somehow mean Cincy expects us to throw a bomb. Sheesh.

On 2nd look, he most likely comes out of bounds even if he makes the spectacular catch
He approached it wrong off the jump.

Plant the jump foot and go more straight up. Extend arms up and only a slight, slight fade toward the sideline and he easily catches it in bounds. Just a poorly played catch while the ball was in the air, which DPJ normally does very well.

Still a horrible play call on 4th down, imo. That's an ok call on 2nd or 3rd down, but with Watson at qb, we can put him in better plays to get the touchdown. Give Watson a chance to read the defense, and scramble I it breaks down.

Would have liked to seen something to Njoku on that final series.

It was a very high percentage throw and when you see the replay you'll know exactly why it didn't work. An NFL quality QB has to make that throw and Jacoby missed it.

Yeah the percentage certainly goes up with Watson throwing it. I still think it would’ve been a stupid call based on Deshaun being a bit shaky since returning, and more importantly, based on the fact that 3 points were there for the taking.

They lost by 13.

The more I think about this game:

there were absolutely Browns mistakes (4th and 1 with Jacoby, WTF? Running at the kicker, WTF? Defense collapsing at the wrong time, etc)

but that officiating, while nothing new to long term Browns fans, was the kind of shit that turns me against particular players (Burrow, and Herbert before him).
Cincinnati's first TD drive was as "unearned" as it gets. I think offensive PI penalties need to go back to being college football rules. The Tom Brady "overthrow a guy and hope they throw a flag" shit is the weakest thing in the game.
Cincinnati should have been called more for presnap penalties and holding (if we are holding them to the same standard as the Browns. the call on Bitonio was weak -- dude was right in front of his man)
I despise kayfabe officiating more than anything else. Officiating should never be noticeable. Speaking of Herbert, like Brady before him w/the Falcons, he was the beneficiary of a garbage roughing the passer call, where the defender knew the rule so well that he made sure to follow it to the letter while tackling.

They lost by 13.
They had an opportunity to put 9 more on the board if they took the kicks. That puts pressure on CIN and they may not have responded the same way with every play they made if the score was tighter.

So they'd have lost by 4 instead of 13.

Got it.

Well yeah, lol. I saw the game, but thanks for that. I tend to think coming away with 3 on your opening drive rather than turning it over on a boneheaded call could change the dynamic of the rest of the game. Shit like that matters, and IMO is part of what separates good teams from bad ones.
