So Long, Jadeveon Clowney

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Look how far NOLA was over the cap and had to make adjustments before seasons end. The rule of 51 is applied at the beginning of the season, the 53 rule only comes into play at the end, so all of the other cap hits dont cost until end of season.

Basically you get to play under 51 and any cut players bonus, but you have to pay the piper on all 53 by seasons end. June 1st is always a big day because if you release a play before the June 1st cuts you can spread out over 2 years.

Its all crap and complicated, but for now we only have to worry about the 51.
I think you're misunderstanding the NFL season.

That was a scramble by New Orleans to get under the cap before the 2021 season began.

Yes, but what counts against the cap is 'different' is the offseason. Only the top 51 contracts count right now. Browns currently have 76 guys signed for 2021. Some teams are over 80. If we counted all our guys contracts, we'd be 7mil OVER the cap right now, and that doesn't count rookies.

But 20-30 of the 76 them have minimum contracts and no dead money, so when a large chunk of them don't make the roster, we shave enough to get the entire 53 man roster under the cap by season's start.
Yup, 100%

Sorry, i stand corrected, i forgot about that, we re using 3.6-4,6 of next years room to sign him for this year.
I wonder if structuring the contract this way also helps us leverage roll-over cap in a smarter way next year as well?
Meaning, we have cap space this year because of rollover cap. We only get to use that rollover cap once, then it goes away.
So perhaps we get to delay use of the rollover by another year - which means we have a bigger one year cap next year (helps with signing bonus on these rookie deals that are expiring...).

Not sure if that made sense.

I dont think we will have rollover cap moving forward. It will be interesting to see the cap numbers moving forward as if stadiums are full and new tv deals, revenue will be very high. they are saying the cap will be what? 220 million?

Next year might be a crazy free agency, one you might want to stay out of.

Does that include Garrett's suspension? Because if so, that's a very unfair comparison.

It does include the suspension but I think it's fair because at the end of the day it's about your availability.

It doesn't.

The amount you get to spend across these two years is the total of your 2021 adjusted cap plus the 2022 cap.

Shift it forward or back, it matters not.

In the end, it's about predicting the future. Clowney's knee that had microfracture surgery is much more likely to act up again than the chance that Myles' helmet hits Randolph's face again. That seems pretty cut and dry to me.

Now there's the school of thought that Clowney will be less likely to suffer an injury because he'll be participating in his first training camp in 4 years and won't need to play himself into gameshape on the field. I don't know if that's true or not, but I'm looking for reason's to hope Clowney can play a good 16 or 17 regular season games this year.

Clowney next to Garrett is going to make Clowney look small.

The idea that a suspension for an act that is almost certainly never going to be repeated, or even missing time due to covid, is comparable to actual legitimate injuries is absolutely ludicrous to me.

Garett should play more at DT. With Clowney and McKinnley being added, i would love to see it some on passing downs. He doesnt play DT much, but I think Myles could be a Aaron Donald level disruptor at DT for 10 or so snaps a game.

I expect Clowney to move inside a lot, too. It would not surprise me to see a lineup where he and Jackson are inside and Myles and Talk are on the outside. It will be a very fluid defensive line.

Myles also dominates when inside. They’d be smart to rotate both of them inside.

Clowney has been a minor disappointment but week three had some flashes.

That of course depends on your expectations. I didn't expect many sacks from Clowney other than the occasional opportunistic bag, but I did expect some solid run stopping and one or two tackles for a loss each week, so he's lived up to my expectations.

Unfortunately, I don't expect him to stay heathly through the next 5 games.
