Welcome John Johnson III, S

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Great signing for the leadership aspect, as that is one of Delpit's strengths. Tough for a rook to come in and assume that role, so JJ3 can be his Yoda.

This article is not only critical to understanding why Johnson is a huge signing, but also understanding why the defense Woods talked about in the preseason never materialized.

Staley jumped from a young linebackers coach to a head coach in a little over one season. He is way ahead of the rest of the NFL in stopping the run out of a defensive back heavy personnel group.

I'm getting exited about the defense with the right players executing the defense Woods always wanted to unleash.
I criticized Woods, but you can clearly see what he wanted to do. It’s just not really possible with Sendejo starting at safety, Mack Wilson as a frequent linebacker, and Joe from next door starting at corner. I think it becomes much easier with the personnel we have now. The goal is pressure with a four man rush and a defensive back heavy personnel group.

This guy is so likeable, and seemingly a future coach with the way he talks.

Ya it’s almost striking between this interview and what people are saying about Anthony Walker. This dude immediately comes off as super smart, charismatic, and lives the game. I am just so excited to have guys in the front office (and Stef) who can actually recognize these traits and value them.

Intelligence and communication skills are often undervalued in a world where "measurables" get so much hype. But having guys like JJ and Walker to call the right defenses and coverages, and to ensure the back 7 all know their assignments, is huge.

Lots of big plays come not from defenders getting beat, but from blown assignments. Looks to me like we really made an effort to minimize that with these two signings.

This is a great post. It's also something I agree with, as I feel a lot of sports undervalue the ability to actually play the game. Give me the Chris Borland type players all day long. If you're great at what you do, you can make up for some lacking physicals. If you can't do the job, your physicals never amount to anything.

I feel like the Indians have taken advantage of this with pitching. They took the guys who could pitch, and worked on the physicals.

The bolded is also a reason why Sendejo looked so egregiously bad. Sure, he's bad and can't play anymore, but he also was the guy who would try and go cover up blown assignments made by other guys.

If I don't have to watch Karl Joseph and Sheldrick Redwine ever again, I'll be a happy man.

I'm sure many teams keep track internally, but I'd love to know each team's number of "blown/missed assignments" per game, and how that matches up with overall pass defense numbers.

It was Sendejo's block on this play that brought him to my attention.

It wasn't a good block but to be fair, it looks like Sendejo took outside leverage because he expected Gillan to come around the edge. It looks like a first down to me if Gillan reads the leverage correctly and breaks out, but he's not a RB so no fault on him.

It just didn't work. Sometimes that happens. I wasn't even mad that Stefanski tried it. It was his first game and he had a lot of faith in the execution, and he could tell the momentum was going Baltimore's way.
