I picked julian the apostate for the cultural reasons voiced up thread. He aspired to be a true philosopher emperor, even though as Will Durant put it, his treatises do not reward a reader today lol. He was a post diocletian flash back to the antonines.

I suppose you could also make an argument for stilicho if aetius and belisarius are on the list. Perhaps also theodosius, the last ruler of the unified empire.

il Duce.

At least he thought so.

I’ll go with Constantine XI.

I actually got married the first time on May 29th 1982 which was the 529th anniversary of the Fall of Constantinople and Constantine XI‘s death so I am biased.

But Stilicho was a barbarian.

Comicus. You can see him perform at Caesar's Palace.

@The Human Q-Tip

I didn't really help with this one. But, the producer and I talked about what next after the Napoleon's Marshals series and I did suggest it as the next topic for them to cover!

They're working on 1848 next. I am contributing a blurb on the Nordic nations.

It's so tempting to pick from any number of solid candidates for that title. Being the Last Emperor normally wouldn't mean much -Romulus Augustus was a nothing.

Constantine XI though...that Emperor went out as the Last Roman should.

Maximus Decimus Meridius. A true warrior and son of Rome. Went out defending not only his honor, but that of the true emperor Marcus Aurelius. As an aside, he also fought tyranny, freeing Rome from what could have been years to decades of despotic rule by Commodus.

The last Arthur Treacher’s fish & chips is in Cleveland as well. We have quite an obscure restaurant legacy. Arthur himself was a WWI artilleryman; maybe he had thoughts on the last Roman.
