According to two insiders with knowledge of the talks, Ilgauskas and his agent, Herb Rudoy, are looking for a longer-term deal with a minimal cut on his salary of $14.6 million. The Cavaliers are believed to be offering just a three- or four-year deal averaging about $10 million per season.

``At this point, I've got to think positively,'' Ilgauskas said Tuesday. ``If it happens, I go somewhere else. I have all summer to think about that.''

``Z was the face of this franchise; I was happy to play with him these last two years,'' James said. ``I have to talk to him, but it's about whether he wants to be here or not.''

Man, this isn't good news at all. 14 Mil?? That was way more than I expected.

Yea... unbelievable amount to start out a contract. I dunno if he's really worth that much.

Now, if the contract started at 10 mil, I'd do it. Hopefully negotiations can go somewhere along those lines.

I thought you didn't want a max contract, Z...

Well, you gotta start high. His agent is driving this. I fully expect him to come down, but he at least has to field some offers from other teams - for bargaining power (again, agent driven).

Z has his figure - 14.6 - the Cavs have their - 10 - I can see this working out in the 12 mil range - maybe starting at 11, then 12 next year, then 13 the following. That gives us some flexibility this offseason to sign some pieces.

I like how LeBron stated he would talk to him. I'm sure that will have some influence. It's gonna be a crazy offseason.

I'll say this as well - before we do anything with Z, I want a new GM and coach.

we all want z 2 stay around..so does bron..but dat is way 2 much 4 a injury pron center.

10 million for 4 years (not even considering how much the Cavs have already payed him over the year) is a very reasonable contract for Z. It definitely a respectable offer IMO. Acknowledge his talents (shooting, offensive boards) but also doesn't go overboard for a guy with limits (stamina, defense, age).

Need to take care of Z quick though to get that 20 million cap hold off the books

Well, all in all, negotiations right now mean squat. We have to wait for the new CBA to take shape to see how things go with new contracts and the new salary cap. We'll see what happens.

does anyone know what the key dates are for free agency??

when can we start negotiating with Z? when can other teams start negotiating with Z? I assume we get the right to start negotiations first but i could be wrong.

when can we start negotiations with other free agents and sign them?

when can we hire a GM and coach?? do we have to wait til the end of the season? i think we should just to make sure we can evaluate everyone that is available and make the right decision.

and when does next season start?? i am already antsy

who is the man with all the answers

Season Starts in November, always.

I thought we can technically fire Pax right now and hire a new dude. Coaches don't have a restriction either, I thought. So getting a new GM and coach could very well happen in the next few weeks.

Negotiations with players-the actual negotiations-are happening right now. But nothing can be put on paper until July 1st. That is under the assumption that there will be no lockout and that the CBA has been approved, etc. etc.

Hopefully some team in our division gets him for that price, that would be hilarious. Then they'll be strapped with an underachieving, broken down talent that is too tired to play hard a good percentage of the time. Then we can exploit them with pick and rolls all night and get easy hoops.

For the record ...I DON'T WANT HIM BACK. I like Z, thanks for the memories ...but, we gotta surround Lebron with winners who will be strong in 2,3,4 years ....not older players that are eroding.

Z is not ....IS NOT ...nearly a max contract player. Use that money on other team needs. He's inconsistent, and plays horrible defense ...

But there are really no other Centers out there that are effective as Z.
Only Players that could fill the void Z would create would have to be,
Brad Miller or maybe even Stromile Swift.

14 million, we don't need another albotros on our salary cap. We already have snow.

He better take the 10 mill, we don't need huge, and long contracts on our shelves. I doubt Z's play will taper off severely these next few years, but no reason to take the chance.

Jesus why is it that whenever we have a player who needs a contract extension, they stab us in the back first Boozer and now Z.....come on.
