I don't get how a play that develops that quick and has a pulling guard is a draw. It's a psuedo draw/trap thing...who knows.

Guard isn't really pulling. He pass sets for a second then takes off downfield to lead. Blackedge is calling it a "lead draw".

A lead draw is when you draw in a 2 back I set with the FB/H-back leading, hense a lead draw...this is something different...a pulling guard is not a lead pay either, its a sweep or a trap, and since runs with Cardale aren't designed to go outside, it has to be a trap block...and it was totally a pulling guard, was clear as day on the replay they showed...very creative play.

A lead draw just has a lead blocker. Can be from any set and have any lead blocker.

If it was a trap, the puller would block someone on the LOS. Instead, he leads downfield.

I've never, ever seen a lead draw where a G is the lead man...ever...either a C, fullback, or H-back

And the reason there is no one on the LOS blocked is because they are rushing the passer, while the G is pulling...what makes the play so effective when ran correctly...like I said, I have no idea what to call that play, but a pulling guard to me will never be a lead play...ever.

OLineman pull and lead all the time. I grant you it may not be custom for a guard to lead on a draw play, but that is exactly what OSU is doing on that play.

But in everything they teach you about football and run blocking schemes (8th grade offensive coordinator here, so limited expertise) is that a lead is a straight downfield block...pulling a player around, no matter what, is never considered a lead block...its a trap block or a sweep block or a counter block or a zone block...why I have a hard time calling it a lead, cause I have never seen someone classify that type of block as a lead block

Do you not have a Power/Dave/George play where the front side blocks down, fullback kicks out, and the backside guard pulls and leads? Or a counter play where a couple lineman pull and one leads? Heck, I am guessing what you call a "sweep block" is just an offensive lineman pulling and leading downfield.

Sweep depends, could be 2 guards pulling, could be a G and T pulling, could be the C and G pulling...but it will always be a sweep, not a lead.

A counter will always be a counter, not a lead.

A power will always be a power, not a lead.

A lead to me is you have a FB/H-back getting to the 2nd level straight up field, and either your C or opposite play side guard getting to the 2nd level straight up field as well, hence why it's called a lead. Never have I seen a player pulling on a lead play...cause it's called something else at that point.

That play is not a lead, not how I have been taught, both in my playing days and as a coach.

Well, one silver lining, there is absolutely no QB controversy after this one.
